    Lag on Online Gaming

This is a discussion on Lag on Online Gaming within the Sky Broadband (Fibre) Help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; ahh ok I'll give it a go hopefully tonight or tomorrow. Worried that disabling upnp will break other things though ...

No, it only helps devices discover each other on a network (really tells the router which ports it wants to use and the router allows it). I even have mine disabled as it can actually be a security flaw.

You can always easily re-enable it if there are any problems.

I have friends who will never buy an EA game ever again because of the lag (mostly FIFA since 2012).
Battlefield 4 is notorious for it too.

Those same friends experience no abnormal lag in any other games, including COD.

I had very bad lag, and also read about the upnp problem for fifa. Disabling it worked first time and I've not had a problem since.
      With sky since 1997.

Thanks - this appears to have worked. I've tried 2 games now, and whilst playing online I kicked off some YouTube streams on my laptop and iPad simultaneously. No apparent lag.

Now the only question is what affect disabling UPNP will have on my network? I do remember seeing a lot of Skype connections in the UPNP log - will it affect this?

Shouldn't do. I have it disabled and am using Skype perfectly well.

It may impact certain protocols such as BitTorrent (not sure if you use it) but you can always set up port forwarding if it does.
Just leave it disabled. If you start running into problems, simply re-enable it and if having UPnP disabled was causing a problem, it would work again.
