What sort of speed increase should I see from my DSL to Fibre?

This is a discussion on What sort of speed increase should I see from my DSL to Fibre? within the Sky Broadband (Fibre) Help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; I used to get 9Mbit sync speed on ADSL . Now on fibre I get 27 (average). Is a 3x ...

What sort of speed increase should I see from my DSL to Fibre?

I used to get 9Mbit sync speed on ADSL. Now on fibre I get 27 (average). Is a 3x increase on the same pair (presumably) about right?

Obviously I'm a bit disappointed to not even get the full 'lowest' speed available. Even though 27 is adequate it pretty much leaves me no 'headroom' for the future on a vDSL system. According to the engineer we have the dreaded 'ali' lines in my area, which probably doesn't help....

EDIT: I guess a second question is that I'm assuming upgrading to pro is pointless, as that is also vDSL and as such won't help the sync speed?

Re: What sort of speed increase should I see from my DSL to Fibre?

there is no set multiplier for increases.

eg. when I was on adsl I got 5-6mbit, my new line was estimated at just 3mbit on adsl yet I now get the full 80mbit sync on vdsl2.

vdsl has a higher potential speed than adsl and is also distance dependent but vdsl speeds fall more sharply than adsl and eventually converge if distance is long enough.

So I think your 3x speed is lower than average in terms of multiplier and 27mbit is probably dissapointing its not impossible to get when previous adsl sync was high.

My guess is your cabinet is close to the exchange but you are not that close to cabinet so the cabinet has not took a lot of your overall line length. Its distance to cabinet that affects vdsl speed.

Also I dont think you will see an improvement on the pro package on download but possinly wil lon upload if you get the full 10meg upload now.

Re: What sort of speed increase should I see from my DSL to Fibre?

Well I'm about 480 metres from it by road and 390 as the crow flies. That's no guarantee of how long my line is though I suppose. Would I be likely to be on the same pair as when I had ADSL? I don't know if one option (same pair) or the other (new pair) is quicker for the engineer, but that might explain it to a point.

I'll just have to be happy that I have 27

EDIT: Have 7Mbit upload now, so not quite full rate there either

you will be on the same pair all the engineer did when he went to your cab is connect a jumper from the PCP cab to the DSLAM cab. your phone calls still use copper all the way back to the cab.

as chrcol has said, upgrading to Fibre Pro would not be worth it as you are not getting the full speed on standard Fibre.

More likely to be the quality of the line rather than the length

Now dropping to around 22Mb on average. At this rate I'll at least get to below 15Mb before too long and they'll have to do something!
