Airport Extreme Base Station + Sky Fibre Guide

Here is a guide to setup AEBS to replace Sky Sagem router or Sky Hub. There are 2 ways to set the AEBS up one is using Airport Utility 5.x and the other using 6.x. You must follow steps 1-1.5 for both.

UPDATE 1: Added link on how to extract username and password from the Sky Hub. Once you have done this jump to step 2.

UPDATE 2: Added a link for AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Windows XP SP2+ & Vista. Please note that I am unable to check that this version of APU has the same options as 5.6 so it may not work. I will update if someones is able to check this out.

UPDATE 3: Added guide on how to setup the AEBS with using AirPort Utility 6.x.

UPDATE 4: APU 5.x can not be used on OSX Mavericks.

STEP 1: Preparation (Requires original sky router still set up)

      =======================================
How to get the Username and Password for the Sky Hub SR101
      =======================================

      1) Calculating your sky user-name and password

1.1) Go to Sky Broadband Password Calculator - pH-Mb

      1.2) Select "Sagem f@st"

1.3) enter the mac address from the sky routers status page (wan connection)

1.4) enter the sky routers default wireless key and click calculate

1.5) create the final key by adding the user-name and password together (user-name|password), you will end up with a key like 123456789012@skydsl|1234567890123456

Now either use steps 2 or 3

STEP 2: Setting up AEBS using 5.x

      2) Get Airport Utility 5.6 There are 3 options to choose from depending on your OS

      Windows XP SP2+ & Vista
      Windows 7
      OSX Lion
OSX Mountain Lion - either follow the instructions or get the unpackaged version

      2.1) open APU 5.6

      2.2) click manual setup

2.3) click "Internet". Select Ethernet for "Connect Using" Select Share a public IP address for "Connection Sharing"

2.4) click "TCP/IP". Select Using DHCP for "Configure IPv4"

2.5) input your extracted username and password in the "DHCP Client ID" field in the format exampled above.

2.6) click "DHCP". Select your preferred DHCP Beginning and Ending Address

      2.7) click Update

After this the AEBS will reboot, leave it a min and it should present you with an IP address and you will be connected

STEP 3: Setting up AEBS using 6.x

      3) connect your AEBS to the modem and to a pc (i used wired)

3.1) fire up APU 6.3 and get into the AEBS

3.2) under network select DHCP & NAT

3.3) click file then export configuration file (save this somewhere easy to get to i.e. the desktop).

3.4) open the configuration file using textedit (mac) or notepad (windows).

3.5) do a search cmd+f (mac) or ctrl+f (windows) for wadc

3.6) this will find the below:

      Code:
      <key>waDC</key>
      <string></string>
3.7) inbetween <string></string> put your username and password as such:

      Code:
      <key>waDC</key>
      <string>#########@skydsl|###########</string>
3.8) once done save the changes and navigate back to APU 6.3

3.9) click file then import configuration file. select the new saved config file on your desktop.

      3.10) click update.

give it a minute and the AEBS should connect to the internet

      ================================================== =======
      Thanks to:
ScotsLaddie for being the first to find steps 2 out
Apache14 for the extracting username and password steps that I pinched from a guide of his
surreal for pointing out the waDC string in the config file

      Thanks for the guide Andrew!
So I guess this is plugged into the BT modem as with the Sagem?
Do you find the performance much better with iPhone and iPads etc being dual band? The one thing that lets Sky Fibre down is its router. I honestly feel half the posts here would not exist if they supplied a decent router which gave faultless wireless connection . Perhaps I'm asking too much? Is the AE worth the investment?

Yes, the BT modem is plugged into the AEBS.

The router has 5GHz wireless which allows me to connect my MacBook @ 300Mbps and my iMac @ 450Mbps.

Re: Airport Extreme Base Station + Sky Fibre Guide

Ah nice, I thought it was probably possible but didn't have an AEBS to try it with.

I suspect it might even work with the latest Airport express although those aren't very good if you want wired ports as AFAIK they only have 2?

It does work, and should work on all Airport products, the software is near identical.

It shouldn't matter if you plug it into the BT modem before or after you've configured it but you won't be able to access the internet via it until you've done the configuration so whatever's easiest for you really.
