New Fibre Unlimited - what router/modem?

      Hi all,

New here and to sky. After watching my exchange FTTC date slip for a couple of years I was pleasantly surprised to find my local cabinet was enabled within a month of the exchange and I decided to go with Sky. Installation set for about 10 days from now.

The cabinet is about 100m away so I am expecting the 65/20 from the line checker is a bit conservative.

I already have a ADSL filtered faceplate on the master socket with the ADSL router a couple of feet away so the engineer shouldn't have much to do. Will he change the faceplate anyway?

The sky router isn't here yet, what model will it be? What model will the BT modem be?

I have a Billion 7800N which I would like to use so I think I need to extract login information from the sky router. Seeing stats from the BT modem would also be nice but that looks even more involved. Just trying to figure out what needs to be done and be prepared.

Is the 7800N 1.06g firmware sky fibre compatible or is there still some beta version which I can't seem to find?

Will it be 40/10 or is that still dependant on something?

You will get the Sagem 2504N with firmwware for fibre.

There is firmware for your Billion available. You will have to join the Billion forum to get it.

Everyone is being moved to 40/10 so you will probably get it from the start.

Thanks. I had already downloaded some firmware (called UKBillion7800NV6_1.06g.dc1 (20120516_EWAN_ClientID)) from the sky thread on the Billion forum but it wasn't clear to me if it was a beta/pre-release of something which has been released in 1.06g or a beta/test version based on the current 1.06g release.

I was reluctant to install it in case it was actually a backward move. Guess I will have to try it.

That is the correct beta firmware for fibre. The official 1.06g release is for ADSL only.

It is installed and a Sagem router was delivered today so I set up the 7800n with EWAN as the secondary connection so hopefully it will work as soon as the modem is connected.

No one can say what the modem will be? ECI or Huawei or could it be either?

It will be whatever the openreach engineer has since it's them who will supply the VDSL modem.
Mine ended up being a huawei it's also a Rev 3 which apparently is supposed to cure an overheating problem the older revision had that used to cause instability.

According to the engineer that did my installation they are supposed to match the modem with what's in the cabinet although Huawei modems work with ECI DSLAMs but apparently there can be issues with ECI modems on Huawei DSLAMs.

I had an ECI modem installed but I replaced it with a Huawei 3B modem I got off Ebay for £20 after flashing it with unlocked firmware.

Re: New Fibre Unlimited - what router/modem?

What the engineer told me on Monday was they are installing the ECI models as they are the newest. Also if they come to do a fault an you have the Huawei model they would automatically change it to the ECI model.

Re: New Fibre Unlimited - what router/modem?

I drove past the cabinet today which looks like an old PCP re-skinned. I can't believe I didn't notice it before but there is another cabinet a bit further along which looks like it might be an ECI 128. If it ever stops raining I will walk down and look at it.

I guess an ECI moden is most likely and I will have to do some hardware hacking to see line stats.

      Thanks for the info.

Is the power draw on the ECI the same 12V 1A as the Huawei?
