New Fibre Pro installed but i have questions?
Hi Guys,
i did post this on the official sky forums but i thought you guys might be more educated in the "Fibre Field"
Yesterday i had the BT engineer out to install my Fibre optic i went for the unlimited pro option on the phone so it was not an "upgrade to pro" but a brand new installation to pro. The engineer was not too helpful and it felt like he didnt really know what he was doing so much so i had to tell him what port to plug the BTO cable on the Sky router anyway the fibre optic was up and running within 45 minutes so all good there. To my amazement the engineer did no speedchecks on the line so i did them myself when he left.
I'm getting 50mbs down and 16mbs up now thats fine and alot faster than my previous 10mb connection but at the time of ordering i was quoted 81.9mbs down and 20mbs up, the telephone operator actually told me that this was the fastest he had seen so far.
Now i understand that it takes 10days or so to find stable speed but my questions is this...
I have not hit anywere near 80mb in the past 24hours is this unusual? should i be hitting 80mb by now?
My router is syncing at
79996 kbps
20000 kbps
Is this normal? or am i just being impatient?
Thanks for your time guys.

Re: New Fibre Pro installed but i have questions?
well the first 10 days it can fluctuate but it should stabilize after 10 days. give it time after 10 days if it doesn't resolve ring sky and ask them to check the line etc.

Re: New Fibre Pro installed but i have questions?
Hi
If your router is syncing at the full rate of 80/20 as stated, then you are getting the top speed!
The speed tests may be showing slower due to your internal network, such as your using wireless or other things as mentioned in other posts here. Or more than likely the speed test you are using is inaccurate .
Sky will ask what your modem is syncing at, and will only worry about that. You have the full speed so I'm afraid it will get no better than that!

Not strictly true. It might be the case for some but since sky fibre came out, their has been lots of cases of half speed issues, where sync rates don't match actual speeds. The cause is unknown. People have been monitoring the situation and keep sky informed of any changes until the problem is sorted.

Re: New Fibre Pro installed but i have questions?
I have read that there are many so claim this, but in truth it is probably down to misguided speed tests and lack of understanding of them. If the half speed issue is really ever confirmed, which I doubt, then it will probably be to a limited few. However, by claiming it exists, then most people who simply not understand the difference between sync rates and internal connection rates, will all be blaming sky, and this is simply not correct

This is a message from a Sky Knowledge adviser.
"Hi Everyone,
We continue to investigate on a case by case basis each report of ‘half speeds’. In a lot of cases we have proved that it is the home environment or PC that is causing the issue. We want to ensure we are able to identify customers who may be genuinely affected by an as yet unknown cause of slow throughput so would ask that the following is attempted prior to reporting this issue as it may result in a resolution.
- Have you checked your post code on our Help Centre to see if your local exchange is affected by an already known issue? Any issues can affect both ADSL and Fibre connections.
- Have you tried removing all other devices in the property that could connect to your router and tested with only one PC/Laptop?
- Our online troubleshooting can help resolve this and we would ask that you give these tips a try to see if you notice a difference in speed, this applies to fibre as well as ADSL broadband.
- Test the service with an Ethernet cable connection ahead of wireless. Despite the fact wireless connections are more common many things within the home environment can have an effect on wireless throughput speeds. Ethernet connections are normally the only way to ensure a constant high speed connection. Please ensure your wireless device is disabled/turned off if your PC is capable of both during testing.
- Have you removed any network ‘enhancing’ devices such as Home plugs as we have also proven these can have a severe impact on the throughput speeds reported by a speed test website. Please ensure you have removed all items if you have multiple devices.
- Some customers have successfully upgraded network cards/devices and have as a result seen improved speed test results. This would be done at your own risk as we are unable to support such upgrades to PC equipment if you decide to go down this route.
- Additional checks that can also be tried are turning the PC firewall on/off, resetting your browser and clearing browsing history etc, ensure there is not a VPN connection set up and also PC performance optimisation.
**Please be aware that no speed test is 100% accurate as there are too many variables involved in the results provided and this is a proven fact. These variables whilst providing small discrepancies on an ADSL service can lead to widely varying results on a fibre service**
We have seen reports requesting an RDSLAM reset to resolve the problem on the forum . This would only work where there has been a technical issue that has resulted in the line profile changing. If all the above checks have been carried out and there are still slow speeds the next step would be to run a service test on your line. If we see a profile change has been made we can report this to Openreach as a fault and request the line to be re-profiled for you.
The ‘IP Layer ‘ issue we see mentioned relates to the routing via DNS servers on the Sky Network. We are aware of and are actively looking to resolve an issue where some customers may be routing via the incorrect DNS server. This may have an impact on speed test results as there would be extra steps involved during the routing of the speed test leading to a ‘false’ indicator of speed that does not match with either the end user experience or the speed reported by the router.
Thanks"

Re: New Fibre Pro installed but i have questions?
The top of the post is saying what yourself have stated, that it is more likely a problem on the user side.
The important part is the bottom statement, where they say they are aware of an issue and are trying to resolve the problem.

Re: New Fibre Pro installed but i have questions?
That is rather like a reply a Sky 'Knowledge' Advisor would give. You wouldn't be one would you? To say that if your router is syncing at full speed that is what you are getting is incorrect, not only as regards Fibre but ADSL too. It is a bit misguided to accuse members of not having the knowledge or understanding of speed tests, many of them are well versed in how these work and have done actual throughput tests to prove their point. A line syncing at 39Mb should have an actual throughput of approximately 4.3 MB/s, some are hardly achieving half of that.

I'm awaiting the backlash from all the half speeders when they read the part that says.

Re: New Fibre Pro installed but i have questions?
Hi guys,
It's now been 5 days and still haven't got over 50mbps,
I have tried everything i'm using a wired only connection to my PC which has an i7 2600k processor and 8gb ram with a Kingston 120gb SSD. I've tried with no firewall still no improvement, my green fibre cabinet it pretty much outside my back gate about 50 yards from my house? should i be worried?? should i contact SKY?
Kind regards
P.S I've also checked to see if SKY has a fault at my exchange...NOPE.
