Relationship of 'Distance to Cabinet' to 'Estimated Connection Speed'?

Hi all the clever and knowledgable folk.

Is it possible to guesstimate the possible connection speed if one knows the length of cable run to the cabinet?

Alternatively is it possible to estimate the length of the cable run from the property to the cabinet if a connection speed has been estimated by the ISP?

Here's a link to a quick guide. These are estimates of what you might receive.

Perfect, exactly what I was looking for, if the estimate that I've been given is realistic it appears that my cabinet is further away than the exchange

No problem. Other things need to taken in to account also, like the quality of your line, but it will give you a general idea.

The route of your line to your cabinet may not always be as direct as you think and in most cases the estimates they give are conservative to allow for the quality of line and crosstalk

Tell me about it. I missed out on my closest cabinet by 1 house. I'm not even connected to the second closest. I got 3rd best so when I got predicted speeds if 35.5 I was very happy with my results and it can even achieve a little more too.

I've been quoted 13.4 on fibre when at the moment I get between 4 and 7 on ADSL2. I can see my line go to a pole less than 50m away. From there are several lines going to other properties and poles. There's a cab next to one of the other poles - total cable run 150m.

13.4 is very low. I'd put money on you achieving more though. If your line is good quality there is a chance you could be pleasantly surprised. Its a bit of a gamble if it only manages to give you what you've been quoted. Are you going for SFU ?

also another thing to factor in is that as more FTTC connections get completed in your cab your max att may drop due to interference which would show a slower sync speed and suggest that you are further away from your cab then you actually are
