Getting More Speed Than Estimate at Signup

      Hi Folks,

First time I reckon I have created a new Post, and in doing so hope that I don't look silly for not finding related threads in BB Feedback Forum. I have been a Sky BB Unlimited Customer at my current address since December 2011. At the point of transferring my Sky Talk & BB from temp flat to new address was told our line could support downstream of 2.6MBps - 7.0MBps. So you can imagine out delight, when after the first 10 days our speed jumped up to 12.5MBps. And there it stayed, until Jan 2013, ever since then we have constantly fought with Sky to stay at that speed, and as this posts, now sitting at 8191kbps downstream, and upstream 797kbps. Which, I am told should keep our connection steady without dropping out, and reset to come back up at something mad like 13MBps, which has done only a couple of days ago.

My question, that so far Customer Solutions have not been able to answer, is why were we getting such fast speed for so long, and then all of a sudden half that speed, with no change to equipment other than upgraded 'N' router to Sky Hub?

And why is it now not possible to fix speed in double figures, and keep connection the way it was before?

I keep getting told that the drop in speed shouldn't affect how we use our connection that much, but 800MB Roms are now taking 10 or so minutes longer to download, and it is also having a detrimental affect on using multiple devices at the same time, sharing that lesser bandwidth.

Welcome to the Sky experience, made possible by Openreach. The bottom line is if you get through to high enough tier of support they reset your line, then after a bit it will go back down again (aggressive technology I believe, but might be wrong, designed for super stable settings). Happened to me on ADSL and still does on FTTC, my advice would be to try and forget it and just use your internet as long as it's not actually broken 'cause there is no winning this one and all the companies are the same. Roll on when you only have to pay for what you get, not the theoretical maximum. We can all marvel then at how quickly cables are replaced and lines rerouted to nearer street cabinets to ensure most revenue.

Re: Getting More Speed Than Estimate at Signup

I suppose I will just cope with having a slow unlimited bb connection, when i could have a fast & stable connection instead. Agents @Sky have repeatedly said that the line can support 13.5-15MBps, so being capped at 8.1 for stability feels like a bit of a mickey take. Would be interesting if any other customers have experienced similar problems with Sky, or other ISPs. Perhaps share how to navigate around the problem, or even how to complain enough to get it fixed, because after 12 months of not being listened to, I may still consider moving to the dark side and taking BT up on their Infinity 1 product when it becomes available in March 2014.

Can you post your stats please?
How to get your Sky Router statistics

If you do not have a central filter it would also be useful to see your stats from the Test socket
How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

Re: Getting More Speed Than Estimate at Signup

With these figures you should easily get around 10Mb. Is that from the Test socket? If not please try it, you are looking for an increase in the noise margin, not an increase in speed.

If the result is the same or very near, your best bet is to try to convince Sky to run DLM training on your line again. Note the training, simply having DLM running will do nothing.

Thanks for advice given here, called CST again today and have adjusted snr again and slight increase in speed again. Now at 9MBps! Will post stats in a while.

Re: Getting More Speed Than Estimate at Signup

Sadly this issue didn't really go away, even with myself being persistent and calling almost every evening when the hub would disconnect and re-connect. Eventually spoke to an advisor on 13th jan who stopped DLM, as could see it was struggling to balance speed and noise.
Here is a Snapshot showing DLM "training" on our line, and then overnight after calling CST and having it removed, and a case sent to the "Sky Engineers" about my exchange WSPRE:

Can't read the links in your post #9, but if they are anything like #8 then I would say DLM training is running on your line.
