The quality of BTO engineers has fallen dramatically. All of the old school engineers who would fix the fault are going in to retirement. Their replacements are taught a faceplate will fix everything! The fibre push has meant engineers are being shifted around the country, this can actually be a good thing as you can end up with one of the more experienced engineers like we did! (12 months of line drops to fix a BB fault, 10 OR engineer visits, ZERO compensation, BT customer!!). Unfortunately the problem comes from the top as ever, spend as little time as possible to get as many jobs “completed” (completed as in “we’ve tried this, we know full well it won’t work but I’ve got to dash to the next job”!!!) Afraid this will only get worse unless people complain to the governing body.

      Off topic:-

Recruitement news:- 1000 engineers in 2012, further 250 from service personal who are already commited to leaving the Armed Forces. Fibre roll out is approx 18 months ahead of schedule.(expect two thirds of UK premises to have fibre available during spring 2014).

My son has just moved into his new home. No active phone line. Signed up with Talk Talk for phone and broadband. Would not have been my choise!!! BT engineer to call today between 1pm and 6pm. As he was at work I went over to wait for engineer to call. He arrived at 1.03pm. How lucky was I, but I suppose it depends on where you live and how busy they are.

Re: BTO Engineer No Show, Sky Hapless

The BTO "engineer" who initially installed my FTTC equipment (not with Sky then thank goodness) told me he was an ex-squaddie who was promised a job after his forced redundancy. Hey-presto 6 days training later he's trundling round in a van doing FTTC installs while the established BTO engineers are left to deal with the faults and pole work.

My move to Sky was an out and out shambles. Apparently the BTO engineer was booked & confirmed in the Sky system but not in the BTO system? I had several messages confirming the switch, but when it came to the crunch it took 5 working days to get it done. BTO knew nothing about the switch because it had not been entered in their system. This has been verified by Sky Executive Support Team.

      Hi Tazmaniandevil,

This is an old thread and the issue should have been dealt with by now.

It would be hard for us to comment on the issues with your specific case, but it is fair to say that most installations go through without too many problems.

Why slate sky when it's BTO that have messed up?

Re: BTO Engineer No Show, Sky Hapless

Reading it again gymno, the issue is with the communication between Sky and BTO's systems.

Not knowing where the specific problem is/was would be difficult to say without the specific information.

Re: BTO Engineer No Show, Sky Hapless

I did not set out to slate Sky & don't feel I did really. I feel justified in criticising Sky because my particular case was Sky's fault. They failed to book the appointment properly, despite maintaining it was BTO's fault until the complaint finally reached the top of the tree.

This is an old topic, and my case has been resolved, more or less. However, people should be aware that for all their obvious problems, BTO are not always at fault despite what Sky CS agents may say.

      Fair points.

      I didn't mean anything bad.
Was stupidly letting my own experiences of bto cloud my judgement there.
(I couldn't even refer to them as 'bto' for 6 months - just 'grr' lol).

      My bad.

Re: BTO Engineer No Show, Sky Hapless

No worries. I too have had horrendous experiences with them. It's no better for BT customers, who also have to deal with BTO for services.
Possibly worse for BT staff, who have to deal with their own colleagues, and who still mess it up.
