Ofcom wants to ban misleading broadband speed ads

I've been reading about Ofcoms latest research into broadband speeds and they come up with this
      quote:

      AVERAGE DOWNLOAD SPEEDS
      BT 'up to' 8Mbps - 4.1 to 4.8Mbps
      Orange 'up to' 8Mbps - 3.3 to 4.3Mbps
      Plusnet 'up to' 8Mbps - 3.4 to 4.4Mbps
      Virgin Media 'up to' 10Mbps - 9.5 to 9.7Mbps
      BT 'up to' 20Mbps - 6.9 to 8.7Mbps
      O2/Be 'up to' 20Mbps - 9.9 to 11.6Mbps
      Sky 'up to' 20Mbps - 7.4 to 8.8Mbps
      TalkTalk 'up to' 24Mbps - 7.7 to 9.3Mbps
      Virgin Media 'up to' 20Mbps - 17.4 to 18.6Mbps
      BT 'up to' 40Mbps - 30.5 to 33.1Mbps
      Virgin Media 'up to' 50Mbps - 43.9 to 47.2Mbps

      unquote.

Is the average Sky download speed really averaging about 8meg..??

Re: Ofcom wants to ban misleading broadband speed ads

Not according to our own speed tester, it is more like 4.3Mb. I think these figures might be based on the Samknows testing, which might not actually be representative. Only those with a real interest in broadband speeds will have applied to be included in the test. That may not have included many with very low speeds and no interest in the tests .

As a result of this report, they said that less than 3% could get 20Mb on the up to 20Mb packages.

It may be interesting to run a Poll on the forum for speeds being received by members.

Re: Ofcom wants to ban misleading broadband speed ads

The figures are indeed based on the SamKnows testing. Until a little time ago I was one of the testers. I am interested in broadband speeds but my own speed averages what you say exactly, 4.3Mbps. If sufficient people show willing a Poll might be a good idea.
Although I would say that your statement,
"Only those with a real interest in broadband speeds will have applied to be included in the test."
Holds perhaps even more true in a Poll in this Forum?

But a lot of users on the Internet would lie, they would make out that it's only a small minority that don't get anywhere near the speeds they should be getting.

      That's what makes this funny

Everybody receives up to 20Mb except those on Connect.

and if Sky's average is 7.4 - 8.8Mb there must be many who get over 8 Mb, more than half of Sky's customers in fact.

They can't lie, the testing is done through a special modem which is connected to the Sky modem which reports back to Samknows. I know as I have one.
