i get what your saying about distance from the exchange but the speed im getting now is a little lower than the speed i was getting with post office broadband when the line was supposedly full of errors so on an error free adsl2 service should i not be getting a higher speed?

taken from the email i recieved from them
Your Sky Unlimited at 12.50 a month offers you a maximum download speed of up to 20Mb and we estimate that the maximum download speed your line could support is 5.5Mb. Your monthly usage allowance is unlimited.Once your line is active, please leave your Sky Wireless router turned on for the first 10 days so we can test these speeds.

The email you quote says a maximum of 5.5Mb, unless it's a typo?

You appear to be right on the border of 2 exchanges. 1 has Sky LLU (cam) and 1 doesn't (Ban). Now if you are actually on Ban, then the speed leaving the exchange will be around 8Mb (so 7.5Mb would be reasonable as quoted by BT). However if you are on Cam, then it will be 20Mb.

If the BT guy says you are on Cam, ask him is the exchange has Sky's LLU equipment there and if your line if hooked up to that.

I've got a hunch that the databases that hold details about your line could be wrong which is why you are getting all this mis-information.
He is on Sky LLU as shown by his stats. Someone has messed up giving an estimate of 5.5 for a line this long.

but as ive seen from many people on here that sky's estimate is usually a very low estimate and the woman on the phone told me that too and said it would be my minimum. and when i phone them they check my line and say yes you are correct you should be getting 5-8mb, but the last time i was basically told it doesnt matter what you have been told and that 3.5 was the best they could do and basically tough luck.
never mind i should be back with my old isp soon enough

Did you manage to contact the BT engineer to find out which exchange you are actually connected to?

It could make for an interesting discussion.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

Fair do's. But why is the BT engineer saying that Sky is only providing 7.5Mb at the exchange

I have not seen a report anywhere where a BT engineer had anything good to say about Sky. I think the green eyed monster may have something to do with it. I have a pal with BT who is a broadband engineer who would not believe I was getting 9Mb and could get more if I pushed for it. I had to invite him into my house and show him. He lives about half the distance from the exchange than I do and gets 6.5 on the top BT offering. He now says he would get Sky if he did not get his Broadband free with his job.

For your post code, BT estimate that the line should push around 4.5mbps at most.

Which would mean that LLU would give more.

      Re: sky are con artists

That estimate is for both SMPF AND MPF (LLU).

Edit: Rethinking what I posted last (just in case...)

For your post code, the line length estimates are around 4km odd long. If you've had 3 SFIs, and the last one agreed that the speed is about right for the line length, then I doubt there's much more that can be done unfortunately.
