Thumbs up My ongoing Sky Unlimited BB experience

Hi. I thought i'd log my experiences from the first day of connection, the DLM and my final speed. Also any problems i might come across along the way. Just as a reference to others thinking of/ going through a change to sky BB.

Ok. So far so good, i know its early days (6 hours into being connected to be precise ) but the date they gave me in the "welcome" letter is the date i was switched on. Which, from reading some of the other posts, has been a problem for others. I was also told in the letter that the first day of connection, i would start off on 4meg and gradually increase it to find the most stable connection for me and they weren't lying
The switch over from AOL went without a hitch too, so like i said, so far so good.
I consider myself lucky so far because everything has worked out how it should, hopefully it continues.

In my stats below i'll show that 4meg is exactly what i'm getting, also my router stats.

OK, my router is the sagem F@ST 2504 and its stats are :-

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 94209 150192 0 0 0 3:19:53
      LAN 65529 44830 0 0 0 3:20:57
      WLAN 89540 53117 0 0 0 3:20:29
      ADSL Link------------Downstream ------Upstream
Connection Speed ----4095 kbps-------- 605 kbps
Line Attenuation --------17.0 db----------- 7.5 db
Noise Margin ------------13.3 db -----------16.4 db

The line attenuation is around 3-4db higher than before on downstream but i guess it can fluctuate with different a new router.

Also the firmware version is 1.9Sky

My new speed results are (from speedtest.net) (i know, not the most accurate )

Just for a bit of background info, this is what i was getting with AOL (looks can be deceiving, it would jump around like a cat on a hot tin roof!! )

      http://www.speedtest.net/result/770978304.png

I've already seen an increase in upload speed of around 100-200kbps on what i was getting from AOL and a much more steady download speed, no fluctuation what so ever.
To be honest, i'd be happy if it stayed at that speed and remained just as steady, but as i've been told before (by the skyuser forum mod IsItMe ) i should get close to, if not the full 20meg.
So finally, watch this space to see my progress. I'll post my stats and speed differences as the days roll on.

Thanks for reading and feel free to post your own comments on how your switchover went and your stats to compare.

      Thanks again!!

      Mark O

Your attenuation is great but I would expect a higher noise margin. Have you tried connecting to the TEST socket???

I'll try tomorrow with the laptop. I'm running the router through a telephone extension cable (if that makes any difference to the noise margin )
      i'll post stats tomorrow morning

      Thanks for the swift response

It can and will make a big difference. Get plugged into you Master socket as soon as you can and if possible, fit and use a filtered faceplate..

OK thanks. Any recommendations of which one and where to buy? From the tutorial listed in the other forum post, it looks relatively simple to fit even for a complete novice like me

just to add. The cable is 5metres long and plugged into the master socket downstairs. i'm going to replace it with a 3metre very soon as it doesnt need to be that length.

You would be better getting a good quality longer RJ11 cable, much better than telephone extension.

At that price I would question the quality. It is probably a standard 4 core telephone cable with RJ11 plugs, which may be no better than your existing telephone extension. I would have recommended something like this Kikatek.com | (F3L900EA15ICE-S) High Speed Internet Modem Cable - 4.6 metre It is a Cat 5 shielded cable which will pick up much less interference than a standard telephone cable.
