Why is broadband in the UK so bad?

With the UK being about the size of the US state of Oregon, you'd think they'd be a global leader in broadband like S. Korea. I'm curious why the UK is so far behind on broadband when they have such a tiny country to cover.

Errm, probably the same reason why the roads are bad, public transport is bad, tax levels are bad and ad infinitum

Thats because the south Korean government paid for the backbone infastructure.

Even with that we're still talking about a small country to build an infrastructure for. The UK is a wealthy nation and building a solid infrastructure should easily be within its means. I could understand if it was the size of Australia, US or China, but with such a small area to cover, you'd think it would have been done already. Perhaps the television tax needs to be eliminated and turned into an internet tax to build up the infrastructure.

I think that may have already started or be imminent with the 50p charge on landlines.

Don't forget South Korea as a country was devastated by war and virtually all infrastructure as well as industry had to be rebuilt from scratch.

Just think how well we could have been doing if we'd lost a war or two.

The armistice for the Korean War was signed in 1953, a full 20 years before networking was invented. I don't think the damage from the Korean war is the reason they have a solid network infrastructure in S. Korea.

Obviously I wasn't referring to a digital network infrastructure but the standard type of industry & infrastructure a country needs to progress to a state where they find easier to lay down a brand new network backbone from scratch. Because S. Korea is a relativiely young country in terms of technology and light industry it was relatively easy for them to decide to move entirely into new direction, which is why the government could invest 50 Billlion in the early 90s.
