Mid/Everyday Monthly Usage stats from Sky
In response to my question to Sky Help centre by e-mail:
"As a Sky Broadband customer on the Mid package, I am concerned about the impending reduction in monthly usage from 40GB to 10GB. Will there be a facility via MySky to track and view my usage?"
I received the following reply:
"At this moment there isn't software incorporated to measure your monthly usage. If you rarely exceed the monthly allowance by a small amount, Sky will not contact you. If you do then Sky will advise you of this."
In response to my follow up question:
"Would you please tell me what my month by month usage has been over the past 12 months for which the data is available please?"
I received the reply:
"Unfortunately, Sky does not keep a record of customers' monthly broadband usage. The system only flags abuse of the system but does not keep a log of monthly usage."
Disappointed but not totally surprised to find that they (apparently/allegedly) don't have/keep usage stats per user.
For the record, I joined Mid in July 2007 from PIPEX (where I was paying £17.99 per month for a 2Mbps fixed connection with 30GB monthly usage). My predicted speed on Mid was 4.5Mbps but my actual connection speed is currently about 5.2Mbps. All in all, it's been good value at £5 per month for the last 2 years (getting the £5 per month discount for being on-net with Sky Talk) and I have been very happy to be on Sky BB to date.

They will know full well how much the average user uses, but whether they keep the customer specific info attached to that data is another story.

That seems very likely. According to the above they would not know unless the limit had been breached. I doubt they even do this, given the number of members who have admitted exceeding their allowance with no comeback. The decrease in allowance is looking more and more like a marketing ploy.

Ah well it's cost them my subscription and I'm sure I won't be the only one

This is pathetic.

The usage cap reduces from 40gb to 10gb, in line with the actual usage of the vast majority of our customers

So the rest of us who actually used this limit are getting screwed over.
Fantastic. We'll get faster speeds but less to use it on. Like a Ferrari on a 30mph road.
Thanks, sky. If possible, I'll be cancelling this service and finding another.

Sky know full well what people use - it's likely to be saved by MAC address but it's known...

Re: Mid/Everyday Monthly Usage stats from Sky
IANTE
Even you have to admit that this is a feeble excuse for reducing the limit. If the 'vast majority' do not use their full allowance, what does this take out of Sky's pocket? If they had said "The usage cap reduces from 40gb to 10gb, in line with the actual usage of the vast majority of our customers, so we are reducing the cost by £X" it would have made more sense.

Re: Mid/Everyday Monthly Usage stats from Sky
I got the first notification letter this morning and am disgusted at this new monthy bandwith restriction. I mean on the Mid pakage this is not just a restriction, it's totaly choking the usage allowance.
Off to look for another provider now, and possibly cancelling sky TV too just incase that gets a cap on how much you can watch.
