      Broadband with just Sky+ service

I remember reading on these forums in the past that if you downgraded your TV package to just the Sky+ service for 10 a month you could keep your broadband. I've just tried to do that and Sky wouldn't have it (despite my pushing them on it), they said I had to have a TV package to get the broadband.

(They didn't offer any deals either like they did last time I thought about getting rid of my Sky package.)

So I'm going to leave Sky. I know broadband will now be more expensive for me, but overall I'll be saving money as I will no longer have to pay for Sky sports channels (cricket was the only reason I had Sky, but I just don't have time to watch it these days).

I suppose I could just take out the basic Sky service at 17 a month, but that's 22 a month with my broadband, and I can get Virgin fibreoptic broadband for that, and very fast broadband is more attractive these days than slower broadband and 100 channels of rubbish on TV.

Sky dropped the 10 sub for + some time ago, as they say bb is currently only available with a tv package.

Be careful when chosing your new provider, some of the super fast ones arnt that when they are throttling etc at peak times.

      Good luck.

You would be MUCH better off going to something like O2 for broadband if their LLU service is available to you.

My contract with Virgin is up today and I will be pleased to be rid of them

Re: Broadband with just Sky+ service

With my previous BB supplier, Madasafish (PlusNet) on the other telephone line I was getting a synch rate of 2200kbps on a good day but it often fell to 1600 and I had to reboot at least once per day.

I had Virgin (ntl) analogue TV for years at 8.50 a month, which they suddenly put up to 16 without notice; freeview was poor here.

I saw a Virgin offer of telephone, TV and basic BB for 20, so I went for it, even though I never intended to use the phone (FAR too expensive) because we still needed the TV so I was getting 2 Mbps BB for 4.

The BB is quite good but is heavily throttled (50%) between 10 am and 3 pm and also between 4 and 9 pm if you download more than a small amount (500 MB). The higher speeds are more expensive (7 more per month for 10 Mbps, which I don't really need) and more heavily throttled (75%). Support is dreadful should you be unlucky enough to need it. The TV is good quality but the number of channels is little more than freeview unless you pay a LOT extra.

When we wanted the FX TV channel, it was only available on Virgin's top TV package. We checked Sky's line-up and FX is available in one of the mixes for 1 over the basic subscription. Sky's BB is LLU and I now have a steady synch of 3104 kbps and good support when I needed it. We have 2 mixes with the TV so I get much more for 23 than from Virgin, since I had to retain a BT line anyway.

So the reasons I am happy to be rid of them are price, heavy BB throttling and terrible customer service.

you still have to have a sky+ box with sky viewing card, but your sub is just 10pm and you get the FTV/FTA channels and Sky+ functionality.

Wink Re: Broadband with just Sky+ service

Hi - I called up to cancel last week, and was offered one mix for 3 per month for the next three months. I also got to keep my Sky+ functionality and broadband with this. Call their bluff and ask to cancel, you may get a similar deal!

      Regards,

      Chris
