5-10 second delay before a web page loads

For the last few nights my browsing seems to be slowing down considerably.
I've always had a great connection and fast too.
Nothing on my setup has changed, connected via wire, no extensions etc. and definitely no spy ware or virus's.
BT put in a new cable from the post outside into the house earlier in the year so that should be okay
I've just had a go at pinging the beeb, all four packets lost and three out of four lost for google.
Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

Re: 5-10 second delay before a web page loads

This sounds a lot like DNS server failure, however it is interesting that it doesn't appear to have been a more widespread problem that more people have reported.

It would be really interesting to see what DNS servers you have configured.

On your system, do start --> run --> cmd and type in "ipconfig /all". Find your network IP address "ie 192.168.0.100", and look for your DNS servers. If you haven't changed anything, these should be the same as your default gateway, most likely 192.168.0.1.

Then, get a web browser and connect to http://192.168.0.1 (replacing that IP with the IP of your default gateway if that happens to be different), and login (default is username: admin, password: sky).

In here, look at your ADSL IP setting, and find out what DNS servers you have. This should be 90.207.238.97 and 90.207.238.99.

If this is the case, then you are using the standard Sky DNS servers, and I'm slightly confused as to what the problem is. If somewhere you are using non-Sky DNS servers, or somehow you have out of date servers here, then I think we will have identified the problem.

Re: 5-10 second delay before a web page loads

Many thanks for the replies, still taking a while for pages to load.
My DNS details are exactly as posted above so I'm still unsure whats causing it.
I will try a different cable tomorrow though to see if that makes a difference and then maybe open DNS if no better.

Re: 5-10 second delay before a web page loads

Sky's DNS servers are a bit pants at times, you say it's only at night? It could also be the DNS servers also being hammered with peak time traffic, especially with the nights drawing in and kids are spending more time at home at night.

Try openDNS, it's quick to set up and if that's not the problem you can just jump back to Sky's.

Re: 5-10 second delay before a web page loads

I can understand the problem. I find that sometimes the Sky DNS servers are hesitant and sometimes they appear to hang. My usual cure is to hit the "Stop loading this page" button (the big X) and try again. It usually loads immediately (perhaps because most of it is in the cache).

I'd love some logs or analysis of direct evidence of the Sky DNS servers being "a bit pants", as personally I find them flawless. (the 90.207.238 ones).

Re: 5-10 second delay before a web page loads

When I was on Sky there was severe lag getting pages like the OP states, it got so bad I used openDNS all the time as they performed much better than the sky ones.

Re: 5-10 second delay before a web page loads

I often get slow loading of webpages post 4pm. It's not throttling/shaping because I can download programmes from iPlayer at 1.4MBps.
