Will a change from connect to sky unlimited increase my broadband speed?

      Hi,

I am currently on sky connect package and complained about the speed iwas recieveing from the exchange. currently Download: 7289 Kbit/s, Upload : 489 kbit/s. I was informed by sky this was due to me being on the BT exchange and if i was to go with them with my telephone and sky unlimited it would increase. Sam knows states i should recieve 17000Kbit/s

      Is this right?

Could you post you router stats please?

Also take a look at the tool available on this site (link above).

SkyUser - Potential ADSL2 Line Speed Checker & Calculator

In practise you should not get a slower connection. In the worse case scenario, you can always switch over to Sky BB Unlimited and ask to be put on an ADSL1 connection.

Remember that Sky BB Unlimited offers far better T&Cs and is cheaper too as you are on Sky's equipment. Unlike most other ISPs, when Sky uses the word 'Unlimited', they mean it.

Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

We require the stats please, not a speed test, which is meaningless for this purpose.

      ADSL2+ Speed Test

We estimate your line is capable of between 16mb to 24mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service. This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.

Re: Will a change from connect to sky unlimited increase my broadband speed?

When switching from ADSL1 to ADSL2+ it is normal for the Line Attenuation to rise between 1dB and 4dB. With this in mind, then you would be looking at something like below:

The above is based upon the Tool on this website that I linked to above.

In the mean time could I suggest that you take a look at how your router is connected to the telephone line. With ADSL1 (i.e. Sky Connect) it isn't so important not to use extensions, etc., for your connection. With ADSL2+ it is more important to connect to the Master Socket with a short ADSL lead (like the grey one supplied with the router).

If you have any hard wired extension, consider getting a filtered faceplate. These can help remove any interference caused by the wiring. Also the electronics are normally better than the microfilters supplied by Sky.

Edit: PMSL - Ged got there before me.

My router is already wired direct to the master socket only inches away.

No problem. I thought that I'd better mention it as many on ADSL1 don't need to be so concerned about it.
