Newbie LOL need a bit of advice on Airport Extreme + 2504N Fibre Sky

Hi All, (SCUBBIE where da hell r ya LOL)

I'm New, I've been reading this site before finally plucking the courage to join. I not expected to be spoon fed information, but that would be reeeeally great if i could LOL.

Currently i have the the existing router/modem by sky on the broadband unlimited, i get only half a meg broadband speed(its bad)

Newbie LOL need a bit of advice on Airport Extreme + 2504N Fibre Sky-1926712858.jpg

so when i went to cancel with sky they offered me the fibre optic with max 40meg speeds ready to be installed this fri, i also just received the 2504N router

      The Problem!!

at the moment i have the iPhone iPad ps3 sky windows laptop blackberry linked to the sky router, but whenever someone uses say the mac and the laptop at the same time, the wifi all of a sudden loses connectivity.

so i now have current router connected to my airport extreme and everything connected to the extreme because of the signal drops... it still does it and i find that i have to alway reset the sky router for it to work...

is there something i am doing wrong???? i hope this doesn't do that to the upgrade i am going to have this fri

is there a suggested way to configure my set up (i.e. maybe connect the sky tv and the ps3 through ethernet cable on either the N router or extreme and everything else via wifi?)

on friday i am now going to have that bt router, the new N router and my airport extreme gonna run out of plugs at this rate..

      sorry for the exhaustive thread

If you are getting the Airport Extreme then I would suggest connecting your WiFi through this.

I don't think I've heard of many WiFi issues on the Sagem 2504N like you have described. I could be wrong. Do update all the OSes in your computers and also the drivers, particularly the WiFi adaptor drivers. This may help hugely.

      As for the plugs....

...how about one of these: Masterplug Indoor Power 6-Gang Surge Protected Extension Lead 2m - White: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

Re: Newbie LOL need a bit of advice on Airport Extreme + 2504N Fibre Sky

I use a Time Capsule (which is an Airport Extreme with a built in HDD). All my WiFi devices (both Apple and non-Apple devices) connect to the Time Capsule and use the WiFi from that. I've disabled the WiFi on my Sky router completely.

Make sure that the network cable that connects between your Sky router and your Airport Extreme is plugged into the LAN socket with a circle printed above it on the Airport Extreme (the LAN socket on the far left as you look at the back of your Airport, the one nearest to the power and USB sockets). The other LAN sockets (that have arrows printed above them) are only for connecting PC's etc. It doesn't matter which LAN socket you use at the Sky router end.

What mode is your Airport Extreme set-up as? It sounds like possibly your airport extreme is set up as a DCHP server along with your Sky router. You should only have 1 DCHP server on your network.

I have my Time Capsule set-up in 'bridged mode' which basically just sets the Time Capsule up as a WiFi access point and disables it's built in DCHP server. The Sky router on my network is the DCHP server. Pretty sure the settings/software are much the same on both a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme

This is how my Time Capsule is set-up

The Time Capsule has an IP address of 192.168.0.14 (which is received from the Sky Router)

Time Capsule Router Mode is set to 'Off - Bridged mode'

My Sky Router WiFi settings page showing the 'Enable WiFi Access Point' unticked i.e. disabled. Click the 'Apply' button to save the config. Nothing else needs changing on the Sky Router config pages.

      I hope that makes sense!!

If you are running out of LAN sockets on your current network setup (especially now the fibre modem uses one), you can always plug in an extra hub or network switch which is what I do. These are pretty cheap and give you extra network sockets. Here's an example. These just plug into any existing LAN socket on either your Sky router or your Airport and give you extra sockets as needed. They come in 4, 8, 16's etc. The maximum number of sockets you can have is something like 254 so there's always plenty of room for network expansion.

Thats brilliant thanks, understood. i'm finally set up, i followed your instructions and i still have a few ports left on the extreme, at the mo the sky router is connected to the sky tv, the new modem and now the extreme, so i have 1 port left on there, and 3 on the extreme. i might take my PS3 off wireless and use the cabe and attach that to the last port on the sky router, does that make sense ?? and then all the wireless stuff phones, pc's etc can go on the extreme wireless
