No, not should - could.

The speed you can get is dependent on line attenuation and quality. Long lines are by their very nature (in terms of ADSL) poor quality. Some people are lucky and either have relatively good quality long lines or are able to get BT to improve them. Others aren't so lucky - some lines just can't be significantly improved.

Re: Sky router stats (speed, noise, attenuation) explained

My distance from exchange is 1.7 miles (2.5 Km) by road, and the chart states [36dbB] but my attenuation is 58dB and my connection speed 2.6Mbps; has anyone got an answer please. Thank you. Kenny444

Line length is rarely the same as straight line or even by road distance. Your attenuation shows your line is ~4.2km long.

Question Re: Sky router stats (speed, noise, attenuation) explained

Hi guys, I was wondering if you could have a gander at my stats and see if they seem ok? I am on the Sky 8mb but have never reached over 5mb. I am using the V2 router and my laptop has wireless built in (Atheros 5005G adapter). I have tried the TCP optimizer and DrTCP but it only made minimal difference. According to "Sam Knows" I am 1697metres from the exchange, I only have one phone socket in the house and the router is plugged into that along with my sky digibox and the phone.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Sky router stats (speed, noise, attenuation) explained

Looks like Samknows gave you direct line/ crows flies distance as attenuation is saying 3km. If thats the case you could possibly get a slightly better speed if your line is perfect.
Try putting your details in here:

Re: Sky router stats (speed, noise, attenuation) explained

I've put the details in the site you recommended:

BT Exchange Information
Exchange: Leabrooks. BT Code: EMLEABR
Location: Greenhill Lane, DE55 4EX.
ADSL enabled : July 31, 2001
dsl Max enabled: March 31, 2006
SDSL enabled : Not Enabled
21CN due : no info
Distance:- Direct: 1.71 km
(appx)* By Road: 2.41 km

BT Line Speed Estimation Other Broadband Technology & LLU Providers

Fixed ADSL: 2048 kbps (2 Mb)
DSL Max : 4000 kbps (4 Mb)

It does say BT line estimation max 4Mb, do you think I'm getting about the max speed I'mm going to be able to get?

Re: Sky router stats (speed, noise, attenuation) explained

With your attenuation you should be syncing at about 12-14 MB. Have you followed all the tips in the Cable and Faceplate section about using your Test socket etc?

As it stands your line looks like it could handle another couple of MBs, but it would be better to make sure your internal wiring is in good shape before asking for the cap to be removed. You are probably on G.DMT and if you can improve your noise margin, could be on ADSL2+, which would give you the full speed your line is capable of.
