Re: Sky netgear routers are rubbish

I've had Sky for about a month now and the router bombs out at least three to four times a week. I loaded the sky bounce router program and it helped but frankly Sky's firmware is junk so I've ditched the Netgear. I now have my Linksys modem/router/wireless router set up and things have worked fine for the past week and don't see any further problems. I had the same set up on NTL for three years and never had any issues until I changed ISP providers and went to Sky. I have to say their first line techs do nothing more than ask you if you have the telephone filters on, the plugs in correctly and the power on, useless to say the least. As for third line, they were suppose to call me a week ago (five day waiting time) and never did so its best to fix the problem yourself if you can.

Could do with a 'Good' category but as it isn't there and as mine as now been connected for 737 hours I'll rate it as excellent. I did suffer from disconnections for a few months after I first started using it but these now seem to be a thing of the past.

Yeah, I was going to vote good until I saw it wasn't there, so I voted average as I'm on my second.

Re: Sky netgear routers are rubbish

I had problems with the WG111v2 dongle SKY sent me but I'll say the router is Good as I've not encountered an issue with it (though I have nothing to compare it to as it's the first router I've had).

I thought you could not use anything other than the kit Sky provided. At the moment I have the Sky Router then my own Netgear (FWAG114) Router connected to that. The Netgear one I have is fine and has run perfectly for well over 2 years.

The Sky one has dropped out a few times and is not as good as the one I have. I would of prefered to stick with my original set-up of a Linksys ADSL-2 Modem and my Netgear FWAG114 if I had the option.

Re: Sky netgear routers are rubbish

I started off thinking the Sky Router was terrible until I turned off UPNP (thank goodness for Skyuser).

I felt the wireless performance was poorer than an earlier Netgear model we had until I stopped using a USB wireless adapter and switched back to the PCI card I'd used before.

Netgear's software is intuitive and their support site is good -- certainly compared with ADMTek whose site has closed. I also had a Cisco adapter but the software was ghastly, their website a labrynth and they seem to charge for downloads !!!

The firmware in my router is the same revision as the latest one on the Netgear support site..

So far as I can see the only difference is that Sky hide the username, dsl settings from the gui and backup file.., remove links to Netgear support and then add their own applet to the test page..

Their additions shouldn't have any impact on the performance of the device at all.. I had a DG834P and planned to move to this asap.. however after a week on the Sky GT I see no point so wont bother...

Re: Sky netgear routers are rubbish

Voted average but............I'm already on my second.

I just think it's a combination of a poor power supply and something not quite right in the customised firmware but they are free at the moment!!!

It will be very interesting to see what Sky charge for replacements if anyone ever manages to get one to last past the 12 month guarantee????

My advice.....get a backup or two while they're free!!!
