      More connection problems

      Hello all

Sorry to be repetitive but there appears to be a range of different advice for Mac users.

I've got Sky Connect with the latest Netgear router, connected to 2 Mac laptops and a Drobo NAS.

The connection to Sky has been up and down since we transferred at Christmas.

      Here's the connection stats:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8064 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 5 db 2 db
Noise Margin 9 db 10 db

I think these are pretty decent and we're not too far from the exchange. We do have an issue in that our house is very old and so is the BT wiring. I honestly don't know where the BT line comes into the house, or if we have a master socket to run tests.

When I do web speed tests I can get d/l speeds between 400kbps (awful!) to 2500kbps (not bad but still not what I would have expected)
The worst part is that at ordinary times of day the connection can drop out totally (checking it in Activity Monitor > Network in OS X) meaning no connection for up to 10 seconds. iPlayer doesn't like that at all...

      I have 3 questions:
      1. Is it worth querying the line? To me that part looks fine
      2. Is it likely that the service will be throttled at peak times and that's why the rate is so varied?
      3. What's the likely cause(s) of the dropouts? Anything I can do?

Any and all help much appreciated, really starting to get on our proverbials this one!

      Cheers

      Re: More connection problems

With your line attenuation, I would have expected to see your noise margin a lot higher so you have a noise issue somewhere although this is not your current problem.

You are on Sky Connect which is heavily over capacity and has some serious slowdowns during peak hours, if as Steve says yor exchange does have LLU then you should ring Sky and request a move onto it ASAP otherwise you should leave for a better ISP.

Posy your exchange details so we cna check for you.

Thanks for the response guys, I'm only just coming back to check.

      My exchange is Billingshurst:

Does this mean I really need to move to TalkTalk?
