      IMAP/POP server rejects password

      Hi

I'm trying to set up IMAP or POP on Apple mail version 2 using Tiger. I've followed the config guide you get from sky.com and I can access my email through a web browser ok. Just spent 45 mins on the phone to sky and they checked and double checked my settings and everything is ok.

Whenever Apple mail tries to log into either the imap/pop server I get an error saying my username or password was rejected.

Anyone else had this problem? I'm inclined to think it's something to do with their servers but they told me to contact apple???! I previously had apple mail set up using pop for my old provider so I know it works.

      Any ideas?

      Most likely causes are:

First, have you enabled POP/IMAP on your account?

Second, do you have the @sky.com on your username?

Third, have you tried the "UnlockCaptcha". (Don't have the sky.com on your username for this and close the email application first0

Done both of these. Went through it myself and again on the phone with Sky. I'm 100% confident it's nothing I've done, I've done this kind of thing a hundred times (I work in IT support). I even tried downloading Thunderbird email client and trying it with that. Got the same error message. The last time I had a problem like this it was due to the provider not enabling pop/imap on their server so my login would never have worked.

And when I try the UnlockCaptcha I get an error message saying my username and password don't match. (I ommitted the @sky.com part)

Just tried it on my old PC as well using Outlook 2007...same error

edit...spoke to sky again, guy raised a call for someone to look at my account on the server, as they finally realised I wasn't doing anything wrong after using 3 diff email clients over 2 computers.

Sometimes the SKY and google passwords get out of step. Did you change your password recently?

You can usually get them back the same by using the "Forgotton password link."

Tried resetting password. Still doesn't work. What do you mean sky and google are out of step? Are there separate logins involved or something?

      Re: IMAP/POP server rejects password

Hi there folks - my first post as I am just in the process of transferring my broadband, calls & line rental over to Sky (full activation due next week).

I realise this is an old thread but, in setting up my new account with Sky, I find I am experiencing exactly the same problem described by the OP. To reiterate, I can access my new Sky email account through the web-mail interface but cannot get Mail to connect via POP or IMAP. All I get, over and over, is the "password rejected" dialogue.

Moreover, I have undertaken exactly the same checks and fixes suggested in this thread but all to no avail. Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem? I have an iMac G5 running OS X 10.5.7 & Mail 3.6 (the OP was running Tiger). No problems with other providers.

      Anyhow, all suggestions gratefully received!
      Cheers for now - Ash.

Have you turned on POP/IMAP in the settings when in your inbox online? If not, it won't connect in your mail client

      Re: IMAP/POP server rejects password

Hi. Thanks for your reply but, yes, I tried enabling each of them. Checked settings each time, checked all the settings in my mail client, tried resetting my Sky password, tried the 'unlock captcha' (just got the error msg), tried deleting all the account details from my mail client, starting again...

You can't have both POP and IMAP turned on remember - has to be one or the other...
