Smile Sky mail password only accepted on Desktop

      Hi

I have iMac and Macbook (also old iBook).

For some reason I was able to set up Apple mail on my desktop (iMac) and it works fine but when trying to set it up on both laptops it wont accept my password for my sky mail.

The only way I can get mail on them is logging onto sky site and putting in user name and password.

I just get message ' The SMTP server 'smtp.tools.sky.com' rejected the password for user 'Katilea' ' but it hasnt changed and worked to get iMac to collect mail for me.

Why won't it accept same password on laptops?

Move here to bring this query to the attention of Mac users

Are you using PoP3? If so try using IMAP.

I am using IMAP, I tried deleting it other account and starting again making sure it says exactly same as it does in desktop settings but it keeps rejecting the password.

I noticed on smtp outgoing server it says I'm offline on laptop but doesn't desktop. However I am online and can access internet.

I am not familiar with Apple mail client, but in the Windows email client there is a setting in the File menu which you can select to either work offline or online. Do you have this setting? It is possible your browser is online but your email client is offline.

Re: Sky mail password only accepted on Desktop

under mailbox heading it says 'tale all accounts online' and i clicked that but the box is still appearing and it still says offline if i go into my accounts and look at outgoing server.

Anyone else have an Mac and apple mail and know how i get to the option to uncheck the offline?

Re: Sky mail password only accepted on Desktop

I'm not sure about the online/offline problem but a lot of mail clients do this when they can't authenticate.

In your Mail Preferences the incoming server in accounts should be imap.tools.sky.com - also check the Advanced tab and make sure that it is showing port 993 and 'use SSL' is checked. To check outgoing mail settings, select Edit Server List from the SMTP drop down box and, again, make sure the SSL option is checked when you select smtp.tools.sky.com.

Also make sure you haven't made the basic mistake of not including @sky.com in your username (I do that all the time!) - it has to be there to authenticate.

Deleting the account and doing all that from scratch can be simpler, as the wizard is pretty good at sussing out what is needed. If you're using IMAP then it doesn't affect anything on the server, as as Sky are using Googlemail everything is archived anyway.
