I am using Transmission to download torrents on my new imac.
I've followed instructions to open a port and fiddled endlessly, but no matter what I do I still get that bloody red light next to "Peer listening port".
I don't really know how to narrow down the exact problem I'm having - I just can't do it.
Torrent downloads are very slow, this is likely a combination of terrible sky download speeds at the moment (I think I'm capped and I have started a new tread in the main help section) and also this port opening/forwarding thing.
On my last router (an old netgear) I could open ports without a problem, but I can't understand what I'm doing wrong on sky's sagem router. The whole process seems a lot more complicated.
At this precise moment, it *looks* like the router is set up with port 59152 open and enabled, but transmission reports "Port is Closed".
Re: can't seem to open a port for torrent downloads.
Yes there is. Although the main computer is connected by a network cable to the router at the moment and everything else uses wireless.
EDITED: Below is a step-by-step guide that worked.
-------------------
1. In the router's setup pages, go "Security/Services" and define the port for transmission to use, as pictured.
2. Go to "Security/Firewall Rules" and add the new port to inbound services. Enter whatever "Filter Name" you like and select the "Service" you just created in step 1 (it will now be in the drop down list). Then, amend the "Send to LAN Server" address to match your own computers' LAN ip address. One way of finding this is by looking at attached devices on the maintenance section of the sky router setup page.
3. You should now have a list similar to this except the "LAN Server IP address" part will reflect your own computers local IP address.
4. Go to Transmission's (or whatever other client you use) preferences and enter the port number you entered earlier (59152 for me), the port is quickly checked and you should hopefully see a green light.
Seeing as it was almost there anyway, I've edited my earlier post with a working guide, incase anyone stumbles across this thread looking for the same solution as I was.
Any chance of editing the thread title with something like "How to open a port for torrent downloads"?
