Also, where have you been trying to connect from? Have you tried several locations?
Yes, I have UPnP enabled, but I also have the home Mac sat in the DMZ which effectively places it directly on the internet.

I can use Leopard's built in VNC connection and get to my desktop that way, but no luck with BTMM.

I have tried a number of locations both on managed networks and direct connection to internet via ADSL, all seem to return the same issue in that I can get to the VNC connection but no BTMM.

It's as though my Mac isn't advertising itself on port 443.

Re: Back To My Mac Issues

Okay, OS X has a built in port scanner and I can't see anything that's open on 443TCP or 4500UDP. This is on my Mac that sits in my DMZ.

That either means that there is no service running or the ports are blocked.

It's strange that no other Mac users have commented on here. Would that suggest that no one else is having issues?

Very strange, not a MAC user so not sure, I did however ask the question last night and was told that no ports are blocked on Sky as far as anyone knows. So unless something has been changed very recently without our knowledge no ports have been actively blocked on the service.

Re: Back To My Mac Issues

Have you tried taking your computer out of the DMZ and either just using uPnP, or forwarding the ports?

To be honest you are probably better off on one of the Apple forums rather than here. Sky do not block port 443, it's required for HTTPS traffic and I use that port on a secure server I keep at home, so I know it works.

There is much talk on the Apple forums about other BTMM communication problems being related to syncing in .mac so perhaps there is another issue you need to resolve first.

      Good luck!

Thanks for confirming that you are able to use incoming 443, it's good to know that somebody is using it successfully.

As I had said originally I know that 443 is HTTPS, but that is an outgoing connection unless you are hosting something on 443. Something which I've not been able to do.

I'll go and trawl the Mac sites now.

      Thanks again.

Re: Back To My Mac Issues

There is a thread over at apple discussions called Netgear DG834 and Back to my Mac which talks covers this problem as well.
It seems that Airport routers respond to UPnP requests in a different way to some other routers, and the different response means .mac cannot connect. The request to open the ports is given on the source port 1900, but the DG834 responds on port 3078; mDNSResponder on the requesting mac ignores this unexpected response because it is on the wrong port. It is possible that this could be worked around in a fix from apple in the future, but it is not really an Apple problem, or unfortunately a Netgear one; we will have to wait and see what happens.

The only way I can see to get around it at the moment is to work out what ports Back to my mac should be opening, and manually transferring them to a fixed IP. I have no idea whether this would work, and after an hour or so on the phone to mac support yesterday with no sensible answer my phone battery ran out so no luck so far. Any suggestions on what the ports might be?

Incidentally, I use a SlingBox on my mac, and have used it with UPnP. The SlingBox software accepts responses on the different port and works fine, so the service does work here.

Re: Back To My Mac Issues

Anyone had any luck with this?

I'm working away from home next week and this would prove handy.

The only way to get screen sharing at the moment is to use Logmein / iChat.

      Strange. It's working now.

Maybe something to do with the recent OS update.
