      MaxDSL?

      What is MaxDSL?

MaxDSL is an update to the conventional DSL which enables users to get faster speeds, - Upto 8Mb.
8Mb is the fastest speed that a standard ADSL1 service can go without any major changes- Whether internal or external (BT Exchange).

Remember Connect & MaxDSL services are provided through BT's Exchange Software! Also the service is advertised as UPTO 8Mb! As the full 8Mb cannot be garunteed!

Speeds are dependant on some key factors,

      • Line Quality
      • Noise
      • Distance from Exchange

If you have a poor line in which the service you recieve is affected. Using Rate Adaption your line will sync and re-sync to find the best possible speed without degrading the line quality.

      What is Rate Adaption?

During your first inital ten days connected to the MaxDSL Service aka Connect on Sky,
Your connection may frequently disconnect and re-sync, This is normal!
After the ten days, Your line profile will be locked at the highest stable speed which the line was capable of during the ten day period!

      MaxDSL Issues

Some users may still face disconnects after being connected to the Connect service, If the disconnections have been happening for more then ten days, Then this is fine if it is just an additional two days, As the rate adaption program may still be working to find you a max speed,
If the disconnects have been going on for more than 14+ Days, You are advised to check your line stats!

If your noise margin is below 5, Then you should consider changing micro-filters and testing via your test socket to see if you noise margin increases!

If the noise margins are at a stable 12+ then you should contact Sky, Who will investigate!

      Changes When on MaxDSL

If you are connected using a modem/router which you have obtained from elsewhere other than, Sky! Make sure the modem/router is MaxDSL or ADSL2+ Compatable!
If it isnt then you may not see speeds higher then 2Mb simply because your router doesnt support a transfer speed of 8Mb!

      Sync Speed

The sync speed is the what the local exchange connects you at. The speed is worked out by your modem/router and DSLAM - (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer)

      Maximum Stable Rate

During your first few day being connected to Connect, your sync speeds are logged and sent to the RAMBO (Rate Adaptive Management Box)

The RAMBO will together with the RAP (Rate Adaptive Profile) work out a Maximum Stable Rate which will be set as your profile after the "Training Period"

      Why Connect or MaxDSL?

Currently BT Wholesale has enabled 5388 exchanges for MaxDSL,

To see if yours has check; Link to Samknows.com - The Broadband Resource

Connect is Skys maxDSL service, Provided by BT! This is a Hold Product for customers until Sky's LLU Products are available in your area!

      MaxDSL Terminology

As technology is confusing enough, The MaxDSL Service comes along with its own set of "Terms"

      • Rate Adaption - This is when the service will sync and re-sync during your inital ten days of being connected to find the best possible speed.
This is also known as the "Training Period"

      • bRAS Profile - This is contains details of, The fastest transfer rate on your line, This is found during the "Training Period"

      • Maximum Stable Rate - Even though at one point you may have seen 7.5Mb, This may not be your maxrate as it may not have been stable, With your noise margin dropping very low, Which would cause disconnects even after the "training period"

      • bRAS - Broadband Remote Access Server

      • RAP - Rate Adaptive Profile

      • NCAS - Network Configuration & Assignment System

      • DLM - Dynamic Line Management

      • DSLAM - Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer

      • RAMBO - Rate Adaptive Management Box
