      1. Install an app to allow the Gadgets.

One of many out there: Install Desktop Gadgets and Sidebar in Windows 8 | Team Windows 8

I can't recall if that is the gadget program I installed on mine. A search of the Internet will find lots more. Some are in the style of Vista's sidebar, some like win 7.

      2. Install 'Control System' gadget:

Windows Desktop Gadgets - Control System

      Works good on mine.
Of course I know about that. I visit the Team Windows site regularly.

Here's another quote for you: "Microsoft does not support gadgets in any version of its operating system anymore. After the security advisory in July 2012, Microsoft now urges users to disable desktop gadgets considering security issues. Also the company has taken back online gadgets repository in the same regard."

I wasn't aware that my previous post was particularly funny. However, "small things amuse..." etc.

      Re: Windows 8.1 (blue)

Sorry, it wasn't intended to be an offencive 'pmsl', just that I find the gadgets a little more friendly. Just that I felt it was a lot to do when a suitable gadget could make it easier.

I was aware that M$ had pulled the gadgets off their website, I hadn't been aware that it was over a security issue. I just assumed (I know a bad thing) that it had been because M$ had wanted to push their new apps system and Window 8.

Ultimately any program, whether it be called a suite, app, gadget, tool or anything else, is potentially a security risk.

Currently I find it more offencive when I install a new program and it forces a change in my browsers to make it's chosen web site my new home page and change the search engine, despite me selecting or deselecting an option not to change the settings. Even installing their toolbar is unacceptable, especially when I have chosen the option not to install it either, but I digress.

Your dislike of Microsoft is no concern of mine.

What does concern me in forums is the use of crude initialisms and acronyms in place of civilised conversation and the standard of spelling and grammar in general.

My thanks to those who have helped me in the past but I think it's now time for me to "rofl" my way out of this forum. Goodbye.

Anyone know a link where I can download this upgrade?

I have been looking in the app store and I can't find it.

      Thanks.

I think I have found that it is only for users in the USA at the moment.

I am having a few problems with my operating system so thought installing that may cure it. Just clutching at straws.

      The UK iso files;
Windows 8.1 Preview ISO files - Microsoft Windows

Make sure you read the faq about the preview, before installing
Windows 8.1 Preview FAQ - Microsoft Windows

Although the preview has been pretty stable, I would not really recommend using it as your main OS.
What problems with W8 are you having at the moment, maybe we can help?

      Re: Windows 8.1 (blue)

Often get the following error when trying to run / open a program.

"The application was unable to start correctly. (0xc000007b) Click ok to close the application.

Only references I can find seem to point to adobe programs not running. I am not trying run any adobe program.

      Re: Windows 8.1 (blue)

That is a common error. Seen that many times.
Any particular program, or is it multiple?

It is usually fixed by running chkdsk
In a Command Prompt enter chkdsk C: /R

      Re: Windows 8.1 (blue)

Its a particular program that I am really concerned about, but my computer has been showing signs of something not being quite right for a week or so.

For instance, one thing that is niggling me is that since I installed win 8, there has been a spell checker checking everything I type whether I wanted it to or not.
Great as far as I am concerned, but since about a week it has not been doing so. There are a few other things in general which indicate something is not quite right, and I have been having occasional freezes needing me to reboot the computer.

I have not done anything to the computer, no software installed except for windows updates last week, I think it was.
I can't say 100% it coincided with that but it is possible.

I shall run chkdsk and see.
