Microsoft drop Metro
Microsoft have dropped Metro. But only the name. It seems it's owned by someone else. With Windows 8 only a week from 'send to manufacturing' it seems a bit late. MS claim Metro was only any internally used codename for the product but they seem stuck for an alternative for full release. Can't MS get anything right nowadays? Perhaps dropping Metro completely would be a start.

Re: Microsoft drop Metro
I would have thought the word Metro was in common use so could be used by anyone. The same as MS were told when they tried to copyright 'Windows'. I could never really understand the significance of it, but then MS always used meaningless code names for their new products.
According to this Windows 8 has already been released to manufacturers.

Re: Microsoft drop Metro
As will be normal, Windows 8 will eventually become the defacto OS on many computers out there, but we shall have to wait for the standard computers to catch up in their specification before it will become usable.

Re: Microsoft drop Metro
Personally I do prefer using a keyboard on my Laptops or desktop computers. There are some advantages to having a touch screen in some case though. Some applications I can see would be simple navigation on a website or zooming in/out on images when editing them.
One pet hate I have though is fingerprints on any screen. Next to that is dust or dirt, and yes I do keep some screen cleaner to hand.
With technology improving for computers in general, the current top end computers will I am sure be able to cope with Windows 8, however I see no benefit in upgrading an ailing computer to Windows 7, as recommended on the M$ website as Windows XP will no longer be supported after 2014. They just won't cope.
I was referring to the type of computers mostly currently sold in the shops. Many of them will not truly benefit from having Windows 8 forced upon them.

Re: Microsoft drop Metro
I can't see any benefit in having a touch screen desk top, unless its one of the super type you see on the likes of CSI Miami.
My son however, has a touch screen HP laptop which can double as a large tablet. Its only fault is Vista which he hates
I have advised him to upgrade to Win 8 if he can get it at a low price. I have seen some price like £20 being tossed around, but I can hardly believe that.

Re: Microsoft drop Metro
Like others I loaded Windows 8 as a dual boot trial on my laptop. I ran it a few times and found the Metro UI so awful I just gave up and my laptop now boots into W7 by default. Metro may be fine on a Tablet or Phone but is hopeless on a proper computer. I have a (very cheap) Android TV STB and run that on my 40" TV, it's OK using a mouse but one wouldn't use it for serious work as everything about it is wrong. There is the difference, Tablets and Phone's are OK for limited uses like 140 character Social Network posts but you need the real thing for more complex applications especially when they are used regularly. All we are seeing is a subdivision of the 'desktop', we now have two definite catagories 'Computer' and 'Tablet/Phone' and even then the Tablet/Phone may already be dividing into two sub-catagories.
Personally I use W7 on my laptop (and Vista on an older desktop) and Android on my Tablet (ICS) and Phone (Gingerbread). They seem to fit with the correct usability and performance for the hardware and software involved. I continue to use my laptop most whereas my 13 year old grandson uses his Android Phone the most but still reverts to his W7 laptop for school work which is inherently more complex than his phone usage.
