Re: IPv6: Trillions of new net addresses now possible
A lot of people this side of the forums have the same concerns Scubbie. Unfortunately Sky don't appreciate that and prefer to use the old tell them nothing routine. I don't want to just pick on Sky there are others doing the same thing. But most people who visit forums like this would very much like to have information before it happens not after. But if you guys cannot convince Sky to share their knowledge what chance do we plebs have?

Re: IPv6: Trillions of new net addresses now possible
This is purely guessing, but I suspect that the IPv6 roll out will be dictated by BTO for many of us since all our connections go through a BTO exchange. I do realise though that there are some ISPs already using IPv6 in the UK.
Whilst someone like yourself would be able to understand the technical details of IPv6, how many 69 year old grannies would?
I would sincerely hope that one or more members of this forum would be sufficiently knowledgeable when it comes o getting IPv6 going.

IMO when ISP's issue IPv6 equipment to 69 year old Grannies it will work out of the box in the same way they do now. I just wonder why Sky cannot discuss it openly on forums like this to give us an edge and a chance to get to know how to do it and let those who are suitably qualified tell the rest of us how to solve our problems. LOL.

Re: IPv6: Trillions of new net addresses now possible
IPv6 devices can have at least 3 separated addresses:
Global address, which is the same as a Globally routable IPv4 address, except there are loads of them.
Link Local address, which is used for router and neighbour discovery amongst other things.
Site Local address, which is the equivalent of what are known as IPV4 RFC1918 addresses. Private addresses for the LAN.
The site addresses can be provided by DHCPv6, Auto Configuration or by the local router. No need for NAT with IPv6.

Just as a follow-up, Windows Vista, 7 and 8 all support IPv6 and I seem to remember that later versions of XP could be configured to support V6 too

With the headlines now saying, Europe hits old internet address limits, and Europe has almost exhausted its stock of old-style internet addresses.

Nope.Do the latest Sky routers/home-hubs support IPv6?
The thing is they may have all run out, but then again many many ISPs may have millions of them not in use.
Until ISPs start shutting off their IPv4 tunnels, there is not going to be any urgency about this.

Re: IPv6: Trillions of new net addresses now possible
Actually all the Sky routers can support IPv6. They just need a suitable firmware update to enable it.
All the infrastructure supports IPv6 as well.

Fair enough, but as at now they don't.Actually all the Sky routers can support IPv6. They just need a suitable firmware update to enable it.
Our hosting supports IPv6 but vBulletin doesn't although they reckon it would work, but you may not stay logged in etc due to the fact it wouldn't recognise or accept / store more than 15 digits of the IP address etc
