I am sure this is one of these cases where one little item is causing the problem. Could I suggest that you go into the laptop's Network Centre and to the 'Merge delete Network' pane and select and delete the existing network. Reboot the laptop and start setting it up afresh. Something has been missed and possibly setting it up again will clear it up.

Bingo!

I am now able to see the desktop from my laptop! It was just a case of turning off the firewall of Kaspersky. I now just have to work out alternatives to turning it off.

I have now managed to set the desktop as trusted (it seems), and both machines can see each other, as well as print things off the laptop!
