      Internet, wifi radio

      Hi,
I am looking at buying an internet radio, picking up thousands of radio stations around the world, but have heard that listening to the internet radio, using my sky basic internet package, could put me over my limit, as just listening to the internet radio, will mean I am downloading data,
ie. When you listen to Internet radio (64 kbit/s) for about 36 hours,
1 GB (gigabyte) of data will be transferred.
Is this true, and is there a way around this please ?
      Alan.

      Re: Internet, wifi radio

I wouldn't worry about it. From reading various posts here about monthly limits, it would seem that they are not enforced at all (at present) so people don't seem to worry about exceeding them. Also, Sky do not provide any means for subscribers to check their monthly usage, so it would be difficult for them to enforce the limits (until such time as they do provide such a facility).

We've recently acquired a Revo Blik RadioStation (multi-function device that does wifi/dab/dab+/fm/streaming from computer) which incidentally is very good...

Sky do not have to provide monitoring software to enforce the fup it is up to you to keep track of your usage and get your own software.

I haven't looked at it yet, but does the FUP state that users are responsible for monitoring their own monthly usage?

Yes, software is available (such as NetMeter) that people can use to monitor their own usage, but I'm not at all suggesting that Sky should provide the software.

Presumably Sky track each user's monthly usage, so why not make that information available to the user via the sky tools website? This is what many other ISPs do and that's the solution that I would like to see implemented.

I suspect that the fact that Sky don't make monthly usage information available to users is one of the reasons why they do not presently enforce the monthly download limits.

Virgin do the exact same thing they say you are responsible for your own usage.

Does Virgin provide your usage info somewhere? Like when you log in to your account on their website?

All ISPs seem to have their good and bad points!
