Shortform links in recent replies to old threads

I'm somewhat concerned about some shortform links that have appeared in recent replies to threads which haven't been active for over two years. The posters are new to this forum so I assume that mods approval has been obtained before the posts appear. The links have been inserted both in the actual replies and in quotes from previous posts and appear totally out of context. They may be innocuous but I am concerned that there may be malicious intent. I am loath to follow any of them in a web browser but have used curl to download one which linked to quite a large (75k) json file.

Re: Shortform links in recent replies to old threads

I hadn't noticed the links, but have been wondering why new people have been making one or two posts by reopening old threads with some nonsensical reply and then disappearing.
I too suspected some nefarious reason.
