      BT/SKY/Virgin broadband support help scam

      Hello,

Not sure of the best place to put this but I have seen similar things reported but thought I'd remind people.

While I was out my partner took a phone call from someone who claimed to be from BT about my slow Broadband speeds (which I have been moaning about in another thread) he said I had corrupt files, which was causing the broadband to drop out.

They wanted us to go on the PC and talk us through some processes to access the PC. Lucky my partner hates tech stuff so said to call back when I'd be home, but was at first going to do it, since I have been having problems. But did question where they were from, which is when they said they were acting on behalf of various providers. Maybe BT would call on behalf of sky, which is highly unlikely in itself I feel, but they certainly wouldn't be involve with Virgin!

I did phone sky and they have informed me no one at their end has logged into my account and confirmed it must have been a scam.

I don't have my number listed anywhere so no idea where they could get it from?

Just be careful out there peeps!

Sadly such scams are not new.

Another ploy that people use is to call up and say that they are from Microsoft and have noticed that your computer is running slow. They then go on to claim it has some viruses.

Well done to your partner though. Had they gained access to the computer it would have been hijacked, wth lots of nasties installed, including software to allow them to gain access to it at a later date.

Of course they have a solution to "fix" your computer. One women who featured on our local news last year was conned out of hundreds of pounds.

And they called back! I really didn't expect them to! They went through similar things with me saying I had corrupted software that the sky servers could tell and that's why my computer was slow and my broadband was dropping out. Didn't seem phased when I said my computer is find and so is my internet.

I just found it odd that they did actually call back to speak to me, which is when I asked them to confirm my name for data protection, which is when he hung up. I used my phone to record the call too!

I called sky back and they were really helpful and took some details but said they didn't have any way of reporting it. So i went here Action Fraud | Report fraud and internet crime and made a report over the phone.

Considering that this type of scam has earned people thousands, I am not surprised that they called back. It is a great money spinner.
