If it is the Danasoft banner you are refering to it is probably a few fays behind and is still showing the previous IP 'owners' location. I don't see it, as I have an aversion to things which give the impression your security is weak when it is not. In the same league as 'you have spyware, click here to fix it' nasties. Most PC savvy users will know that the claims are untrue, but many new users will not and may become unnecessarily worried. Should be banned in my opinion.

The location of the IP "owners" never comes into it. It's supposed to be where the real registered owner of the block of IP's is located, and I'm pretty sure that neither Sky or Easynews is in Portadown !

I would disagree with that, its nearly always right for myself. I have noticed it on other sites as well and they are not using the danasoft stuff. But, I get targeted ads for my area.

I also know that being temporarily allocated an IP address doesn't register you as a registrant of a domain. The Danasoft banner is obviously doing a lookup on one of Easynet's domains, and my current IP is registered to:

My location using Whois is just behind the Club house of my local golf course, I don't think Sky have a domain there.
IP 90.203.4.1. location: Stirling - Stirling

Actually about 2 miles from my location.

I am just going to reboot and get another address to see where it puts me.

Great, but the discussion wasn't about where Whois thinks you are, but where the Danasoft banner thinks you are.

The whois program you are using is using traceroute to find where you are, whereas the Danasoft program is using the geographical address of the IP registrant. Which is why Danasoft thinks I'm in Brighton, and ip-address.com (quite rightly) thinks I'm in North Cambridgeshire.
