I CAN really tell the difference. I'm not saying gaming on sky max is horrid i'm just saying its not as good as what i had before but especially at peak times it becomes really bad. I don't know if its the increased ping times or packet loss or a combination of both, but as an online gamer i can confidently say Sky max is NOT as good as my old connections so therefore NOT as good as any other ISP (like you say).
You have probably being spoilt using 20 pings on the net, im used to about 30-40 pings and as long as you adapt and play enough you train your hand eye coordination to allow for the slight delay. It does not help when you cannot see your bullet trail in bf2. It took me ages on a 56k modem to use the railgun on quake2 affectively but as you could see the big trail of the rail it was easy to adapt , people said railing on 56k modem is very hit and miss but when you are used to it it was quite easy at the time.

I am sure you can download a net meter to meter packet loss to run in the background all the time.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

i'm on g.dmt also capped at 8096. the lowest i get on BF2142 is 30-33ms and thats if i'm lucky. average is about 45ms.

on counter strike: source on GOOD servers i sometimes get sub 30ms pings like 27-28ms. again if i'm lucky.

but peak times i.e.- 6pm to 12am, you can forget about it!

above quoted are for off peak times only.

Weird, not sure if this is since my UL has been at 396 but in Counter-Strike [1.6] my pings suddenly shot up!? Around 50ms higher than they were [on any server, not just specific ones]. Gonna have to phone up tomorrow [or monday if they're shut] and get my UL speed sorted, this is unbelievable! They cap you without any notice.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

my ingame pings (jolt servers for example) are around the 90 mark i play a mod game of UT99 (tactical-ops 3.5) and most servers i get 90 ping and these are uk servers.

My line stats are as follows:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 23.0 db 16.0 db
Noise Margin 14.6 db 13.0 db

any ideas why i ping so high to these uk servers?

Ping from Dos is about the 50 mark, which i still think is high.

any help on this would be great

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

So the majority are getting pings under 50ms , This is a lot lower than i was expecting as round the forums Sky get slated for high pings & unstable connections, good to see actual users stats i may be persuaded to migrate after all

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

dont get your hopes up buddy, theres also packet loss. even though i get about 40ms average pings when playing online it still is laggy at times and when pings go in excess of 55-60ms then it really gets bad.

However recently it has gotton REALLY BAD! even though pings are only about 35-45ms averaging, noise has increased dramatically on the line and so has erros in the last week or so. i do not know what has happened at the exchange or somehting but i have logged a tier 3 complaint. they hav'nt gotten back to me as of yet, but it is soo baad that i can not even play at all! i keep getting connection timeouts and stuff!
