Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

On the question of - does a game with a ping of 50 play worse than one getting 20... there is indeed quite a difference. I don't get the jumpy men, but as an avid BF2 player:

      http://www.bf2player.com/index.php?p...count=58050385

I use the TV Missile a lot. When I was getting sub 30 pings, I was pretty accurate. (Sniper too).

However, my ISP then boosted me to average of 55... Suddenly I was missing a lot. I noticed that with the TV missile, the missile seemed to go THROUGH the opposition heli. What was happening is I was lagging, ever so slightly, and even though I was hitting - I was actually missing.

      Same with Sniper...

You need good pings for that.

Also, when you're waiting for a heli to appear, and someone pitches up to steal it, you can keep your finger on 'E' to enter, and when it appears, you're in.

With slow ping, I always lose those, and the guy with the lower ping gets the heli.

So, yes, a slightly lower ping DOES effect the game...

      Just my 2c.

      Just found this

study done last year with over 7000 people, shows the average male reaction time (pressing a key after seeing a light signal) was 227ms
For women its 242, so we should kick their backsides when playing games

Wink Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

I think you are missing something here. When i play online even on USA servers with a 160ms ping i do not lag or screen jump or anything most of the time, and here is the point i think you are missing, You will only jump frames etc when you get Packet Loss. I have played using pipex on a 25ms ping which was as choppy as hell due to Packet loss, and yet on a 60ms ping to a different server it was smooth as silk... When you take into account the exchange status / sky network / the servers you are playing on the packet loss can come from anywhere but if you are always seeing jumps and judders then it could be that your connection is not as good as you think, or your exchange is running at max levels.

Ping times in games do mean alot when you shoot and the delay is even 20ms late its frustrating but the ping time you have to a server has nothing to do with your juddery screen, if it did then how come poeple who played on 200 pings in the days of 56k dial up did not moan all the time..... A cool tool on quake 2 used to be the netgraph 1 option from the console which showed green = good / yellow = small Packet loss / and red Bad packet loss. I dont know if many new games have an option like this.

BTW ping tests to websites and servers using tracert wont always pick up on packet loss as the packet loss may not be there untill you join a server.

      Just my 10's worth.

P.S im on a sync of 9696 on g.dmt because adsl2+ is capped / limited at my exchange and i see no packet loss to any servers i play on as of yet even if i ping 160ms to USA servers.

Agreed. Jumping screen is another factor, which I never mentioned. It's the missing that's a pain. I was just saying that sometimes, the high ping DOES effect game play.

With Zen, we had a problem when one of the servers on the route to the BF2 server was lagging. Using VisualRoute 2007, it was simple enough to spot the fault. Skynet the fixed the problem, and I was back to the usual rubbish 50ms.

      It can't...

But your score can show it in a big way, and your drop in your accuracy stats.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

as IanMax has said, back in the day of 56k we had no choice but to learn to play with the lag, my first on line game was delta force and always played in a US server with pings of 250+ 1/4 of a second, to get around the lag we had to learn to aim of (aim slightly in front) to allow for the delay, so why not try this ? adjust your game play to the given situation as it arises

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

I'm with you on this sat as i cant get my head round now anyone can pickup a .02 sec difference. My monitor refreshes at 75 hz which is just less than the .02 and I dont see it flickering. However I think IanMax has a point and we may be confusing ping rates and packetloss or maybe blaming ping when it is actually packetloss that is the problem ? If I am understanding what he is saying then if the packet that contains my snipershot at an enemy ( for example ) is lost then the server that is expecting it would have to transmit back to my pc that it is lost and my pc would have to send it again ? I'm sure this would also happen quickly but if i was connected at a ping of 20 say then this would equate to a ping of 80 due to the lost packet being rerequested and resent ?
If this happened a lot it could result in lag / choppiness ?
Sorry for all the question marks - as you can probably tell i'm just surmising
      dave
