Nope, it's now Sky policy not to switch users from interleave to fastpath. Dunno why.

if your playing a first person shooter then is 40-50 ok or ideally a ping of 20 ish would be great
TBH your not going to get 20 unless you live next door to the server.

40-50 should give an even playing field anyway. I play a lot of COD2, and that figure is a better than average reflection on most servers.

no you won't you're right but it will mean the ping is lower than a starting point of 50ms

      Pings on Zen
      to the bbc ~20ms
      average ping on CoD2 (xbox360) ~85ms

      Pings on Sky
      to the bbc ~50ms
average ping on CoD2(xbox360) to scared to look

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

      Hi

Iím currently on the sky max package and get the following ping, which is identical to what I was getting with my old ISP Plusnet.

      C:\Documents and Settings\>ping jolt.co.uk

Pinging jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes of data:

      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56
      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=56
      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=56
      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=56

      Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:
      Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
      Minimum = 24ms, Maximum = 26ms, Average = 24ms

Thumbs up Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

I used to have 2Mb broadband on AOL and the pings vary from 50 - 60 depending on the location on the server. Im on Max now with a full 15Mb and get pings as low as 5 to around 50. (50 mostly for American servers) So i say expect anything but the connection is absolutely great for gaming

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

Well i get a constant ping of 19-20 to jolt q3 servers.
I have been switched to fast path from interleaving at my request. the reason sky dont like doing this is because you get more drop outs on fast path. I have to reboot about once or twice a day coz im on fast path and noise margin drops below 7 reboot and its fine again.
You know when ur router is going to drop on fast path cause u start with packet loss.
But i will put up with it as i get 20 ms less than i was on interleaving.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

Just got Sky BB - activated today and my pings are appalling. I had NTL cable BB before. My ping to Jolt was about 12ms now it's at least 75ms.

      Here's my trace to Jolt:
      Tracing route to jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

      1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
      2 87 ms 87 ms 100 ms cr0.eahtf.uk.easynet.net [195.189.158.245]
      3 75 ms 74 ms 73 ms 80.238.32.1
      4 77 ms 75 ms 76 ms ip-89-200-132-53.ov.easynet.net [89.200.132.53]
      5 76 ms 74 ms 75 ms ge2-1-0.er3.tclon.uk.easynet.net [89.200.130.0]
      6 74 ms 82 ms 75 ms te1-3.cr05.hx2.bb.pipex.net [195.66.226.29]
      7 74 ms 75 ms 75 ms v3952.cr05.tn5.bb.pipex.net [62.72.137.9]
      8 78 ms 75 ms 76 ms g2-48-5.ar01.tn5.bb.pipex.net [62.72.140.14]
      9 76 ms 75 ms 75 ms ge-0-0-0-3801.jolt-gw.cust.pipex.net [212.241.241.14]
      10 75 ms 75 ms 75 ms secure.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65]
The first hop looks wrong - surely that should be very low. Do you think something's wrong?

My attenuation is quite high so I know I cannot get close to the 10Mb connection I got with NTL but that should not affect pings so badly.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 25.3 db 13.0 db
