Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

I've had my Sky BB Mid Connection now for a few days and can't seem to get a ping below 90 when playing on a UK MOHAA server.

The Stats from my router are:
Connection Speed: 2368 kbps Downstream, 416 kbps Upstream
Line Attenuation: 59.0 db Downstream, 31.5 Upstream
Noise Margin: 6.5 Downstream, 13.0 Upstream

From reading the other posts on this forum it looks like it is the attenuation which is the cause of the problem. Its rediculous because for general surfing ability this connection is great but I can't even play effectively because I have a ping of 100 when friends of mine connecting from Sweden and the Netherlands have a ping of 40-50.

      Western67..

I know exactly how you feel. I too join a server in the UK for COD2. I have players from Germany, Sweden, France and many other European countries that can join the server with less ping than I can.

I think its a JOKE that Sky think its OK to offer this kind of service.

I have given SKY a few days to respond (due to easter holidays) if I dont get a satisfactory response or solution then I'm taking my service to some one who appreciates gamers.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

I have just been put on the adsl2+ and sync of 15323 from 7645 and a g.dmt sync of 9696. My pings were better on g.dmt untill today when a tier 3 reset stuff etc... at the exchange. I used to ping 47 on adsl2+ / 37 on g.dmt. But now i get the following.

Pinging Jolt.co.uk - Online Gaming - Clan Server Rental [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes of data:

      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=31ms TTL=56
      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=56
      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=56
      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=56

      Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:
      Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
      Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 31ms, Average = 30ms

So if you have good stats low noise on your line and a high snr at your max sync available you will get good pings, i.e if you have a sync of 8096 on g.dmt and a snr of 10 or more on that sync you should get good pings, but if you have a sync of 5000 ish and an snr of 5.0 ish you cannot expect a high ping time as your line is limited by the sync rate because of a noisy line etc..

Hope this helps some people who have low sync rates.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

im in discussion with there "level 3 support team" that has the ability ti change me onto fast path, i have to wait 3-5 days until i get a response tho. ticket is logged.

im told that for me to get a better ping id have to sacrifice download speeds to 2.5-3mb which personally i wouldnt care..

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

      dont hold your breath:

      Dear Mr Barnes,

Thank you for contacting Sky Broadband Technical Support.
Your High Ping/Latency is due to the method that Sky provides your broadband. We use an interleaving service which, even though it provides high speeds on a stable connection, can cause you latency to increase. Other ISPs often provide what is called a fast path service. This fast path service will lower your ping/latency, at the cost of your speed and stability. Sky does not implement fast path, and it is policy that all customers must be set to Interleave.
At this time, there is nothing that we can do to lower your latency, and there are no current plans to introduce Fast path onto the Sky service in the near, or distant future.
I do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

      Kind regards
      Thomas

Hello. Please can you arrange it for me to have interleaving turned off my sky broadband line. I signed up for 8mg to enjoy fast gaming, but my latency is terrible due to the above. Please can you confirm when it is turned off. I have spoken to technical support, they told me to log into my router etc which is not how it is done. They then logged a call to tier 3 and i have heard nothing. This is the last in a long line of issues i have had with sky, so i would appreciate it if this could be resolved asap, otherwise i will have to cancel my contract. thanks in advance

With all these posts about bad pings on LLU, i wish i could just keep Connect @ 5 for ever. Speeds are super and pings are great (from N.Ireland)..

That sucks mate but thanks for the warning.
I hope they change their minds but i doubt it,i for one will not be taking the risk of migrating only to find my pings are too high for gaming.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

well still no response form tier 3... and thats over 2 weeks ago !

I've been trying in vain to improve my ping to UK cod2 servers without success. Ive also run tracerts to UK servers and it appears that the first hop is the largest. I've also ping'd another server and dont seem to be able to get lower than 60.

      C:\>ping 82.133.85.65
