Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

I get a consistent 30-50 ms when playing CS source and DOD source on uk servers. Its normally about 40, and I find this completely fine, I see no difference at all from when I used to get about 15-20 with my old ISP. Someone was saying that with a ping of 50 you can't play competitively, but I can still normally get the most kills on a server.

I see absolutely no difference between this and a ping of 20, games play perfectly smooth.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

Just set up Sky Broadband on Friday night and I am getting awful pings when I am online gaming tonight.
Have just migrated from PIPEX Broadband.
I play Medal of Honor online and sites which I used to play on now disconnect me due to high pings of 150.
I am on Sky Mid package.

This isn't acceptable for online gaming.

So asking Sky to turn off interleaving is the only course of action (which they don't seem to do according to this thread).

      Here is my results:

Pinging jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes of data:
      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=56

      Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=56

      Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

      Here goes, still sucks.
Rang Sky Broadband Tech support in meantime who suggested trying a different filter.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

After speaking with Sky Broadband Tech support, I got some improvement on my game pings (down to 90-100) so at least not getting disconnected from games so that is bearable.

Went to the Netgear router settings and changed the WAN Setup
to untick Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port

These results are bad yet quite a few others have 50ms and less pings as can be seen in this threads and the 2 below.

      Ping.

      Ping.

Oh well, I am leaving Sky Broadband (knew it was too good to be true). Probably have to wait a few weeks now for them to cancel my Broadband connection although I am within the 8 working day right to cancel period.
      Should have stayed with PIPEX.
I can't play online games with over 90ms pings.

Here is my most recent tracert to jolt.co.uk so problems appear to be as soon as I hit my exchange (South Wales Roath).

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

The ping that I have with Sky is certainly worse than I had with Pipex. Playing HL2, I used to see loads of servers when setting filters to less than 50ms, now I only get a handful.

However the main server that I play on now (See Sig, it's a great server with a really good bunch of people playing. Come and join us if you play HL2), I am averaging 45ms which is more than acceptable for me. I still get killed a lot

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

      Thanks for reply.
I notice your exchange Llantrisant isn't too far away from mine.
Can you try tracert to jolt.co.uk and let me know what the response rate is for you, can you paste the result here?

I can play games (e.g. Medal of Honor) at moment on servers which have an average ping of 100ms among the players.
When I last checked, I couldn't see any servers under 50ms on the server list (most are around 100ms) whereas I could see many with PIPEX like yourself before.

Re: pings on sky broadband, high or low

scopsm, sorry didn't see your message until just now and I am in work so can't help just yet. Will post a tracert tonight when I get in, probably sometime after 6.

I do have a Jolt HL2DM as a favoutite in my server list. If anything the ping is slightly better (only a couple of ms, so nothing noticable) than the nemisis server.
