Ping goes up and down in a regular pattern

      Hi,

when gaming my ping moves up and down in a regular pattern:

It starts with ca. 50 ms goes up till ca. 150 ms and then down to 50 ms again and so on. The speed in which it goes up and down is always the same as are the lower and upper ends of the spectrum.

It seems to be as regular as a sine curve. This is always the case independent of time of day.

Of course it is impossible to play online games like that.

Has anyone any idea what the reason for this could be and how to fix it?

      many thanks in advance!

      Hi Philebos, welcome to skyuser.

Can you give a little more detail please?
As a (console) gamer i do know how important a stable ping is.

Are you using wireless or ethernet?
How are you determining the 50-150ms variability (AKA jitter)?

Re: Ping goes up and down in a regular pattern

hi, first of all thanks for your reply.

a stable ping is vital in games like counter strike (which I am playing). If the ping shoots up (ie it's lagging) in combat you are pretty much dead.

I am using wireless but didn't have this problem with the previous provider in the same house/same place.

how do I determine the variability? In counter strike you can have your ping constantly displayed in real time through a console command.

Ah ok, i wasn't aware of that.
So 50-150ms is displayed on screen whilst in-game.

Personally i would never, ever game using wireless.
      Period.
When testing line performance - be it for speed or ping - it can only ever be a test of the weakest point, which in your case will always be the wireless connection.

I suspect that the sky hub's wireless performance simply isn't quite as good as the router you were using prior to switching to sky.
The rhythmic 50-150ms cycle isn't something i've read about so the root cause may be peculiar to your environment.

That ping will be to a games server which could be in US or Europe. I'm pretty sure if the OP opens a command prompt and type ping bbc.co.uk the figure will be much lower.

Alternately, in the Router settings, Maintenance>Diagnostics type in 218.58.244.20 This will be slightly lower as it cuts out the jump from the PC to the router.
