Question Gaming profile, is it better?

      Hi there.

Gave sky a call yesterday afternoon and asked to be put on the gaming profile, which they did. The reason for this is my ping speeds are always 45-50ms which is not the best for gaming but I was happy with my download at 10mbs and upload at 1mbs. These are my new speeds:-

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 274370 287216 0 21917848 87770724 9:45:02
      LAN Up 244669 234366 0 54779267 20499383 9:46:01
      WLAN Up 56953 52638 0 43706980 7942861 9:45:44
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9925 kbps 604 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.5 dB 23.4 dB
Noise Margin 6.3 dB 16.5 dB

I'm currently getting ping of 30ms now to BBC - Homepage, which is an improvement but could sky not do more. Also my upstream has gone really low. Just to add I did call sky back a few hrs later to see if they could increase my upstream, but they said the call centre that i got through to, did'nt have the staff at hand to manually reconfigure it. They said call back and you should get a different call centre which should help you. Was'nt the best customer service that time
      Anyone have any suggestions please?

I could be wrong but I don't think you are on a Gamer Profile, it looks like you have been set to 10240/608. I think a gamer profile would be something like 10240/800, which would give you an actual 798 upload. Maybe one of the Sky boys will come along and confirm this. All you can do is call back and hope you can get someone who will do what you want.

Re: Gaming profile, is it better?

you would better set to 10 and 1 again with dlm hopefully line set to 8 delay which is really the gaming component anyway minimum delay rate E:G delay rates 8 16 32 problem is now very few people have access to change rates at exchange level and islams only give approx profiles instead of dsalms which you have total control all settings

      Thanks for the response guys.

Before i call sky back can i just confirm what you mentioned tenar about delay rate. Is that to do with my ping speed? And could i ask sky to set my delay rate at 8, as you mentioned. Many thanks

Re: Gaming profile, is it better?

delay rate does affect pings the lower delay the better but only if line is stable

Re: Gaming profile, is it better?

Okay. Been in touch with sky, the guy I spoke to has reconfigured my speed. Also he says I'm on dlm for 10 days and speed should increase and go back to normal. Heres what they look like:-

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 4023 3194 0 532971 1126625 0:42:53
      LAN Up 800945 596656 0 509047198 49327934 15:01:58
      WLAN Up 144752 145692 0 81858554 22420112 15:01:41
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9555 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.5 dB 23.4 dB
Noise Margin 7.1 dB 16.0 dB

Ping speed is back up though to 46.9ms. Not sure what can be done there. The line is fairly new and I get the same speeds through the test socket. Do you think anything else can be done to increase further? Any help appreciated

Re: Gaming profile, is it better?

Just got in from work, here are my settings as of now:-

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 52217 61100 0 5949168 62264153 11:56:48
      LAN Up 860501 597727 0 520517727 49659980 57:06:05
      WLAN Up 4918606 4655690 0 2147483647 2085710921 57:05:48
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10127 kbps 945 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.5 dB 23.4 dB
Noise Margin 5.9 dB 12.7 dB

      --- 212.58.246.92 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
      round-trip min/avg/max = 45.4/46.2/46.9 ms

My download and upload speed are back to original status, also the ping speed. Is there anyway ping could be better? Is my line a stable line and how do you check for sure if it is. I presume it is a stable line, doesn't seem to be noisy etc. Do you think I will be on max delay of 8, how do i check this? Many thanks

Your WAN uptime is showing 11:56:48, so just under 12 hours.

If you didn't reboot the router yourself (or have a line fault cause it to disconnect) around 5am, this shows that DLM is still running.

When DLM ran on my line (twice), the ping times would gradually get better with each resync.

Personally, i'd wait until your WAN uptime shows 72+ hours before judging it.

Will post my stats towards the end of dlm period. Managing to keep the router on, with no disconnects etc.
