      Question pings

I've played about 25 hrs of cod mw2 these last 2 weeks & after experiencing wildy differing lag from game to game, then noticing approx 95% of the players i've met have been in mainland europe, thought i'd investigate...

I only own a ps3, so can't do proper tracerts but can do reverse ones here: Networktools: Reverse IP Lookup, Whois, Ping, RBL Check, DNS Records, Traceroute, Host information

      1 static-ip-188-138-112-3.inaddr.ip-pool.com (188.138.112.3) 1.814 ms
      2 217.118.16.162 (217.118.16.162) 0.328 ms
      3 *
      4 te3-4.ccr01.sxb01.atlas.cogentco.com (154.54.62.205) 0.658 ms
      5 te0-2-0-6.mpd21.fra03.atlas.cogentco.com (154.54.62.217) 3.966 ms
      6 tiscali.fra03.atlas.cogentco.com (130.117.14.86) 4.142 ms
      7 xe-5-3-0.lon10.ip4.tinet.net (89.149.180.90) 21.397 ms
      8 bskyb-gw.ip4.tinet.net (77.67.74.94) 22.859 ms
      9 ip-89-200-134-43.ov.easynet.net (89.200.134.43) 19.676 ms
      10 10.245.133.12 (10.245.133.12) 21.618 ms
      11 b0f8ba18.bb.sky.com (176.248.xxx.xx) 42.684 ms
      12 b0f8ba18.bb.sky.com (176.248.xxx.xx) 42.200 ms

This all looks ok to me, so using the tool on the routers diagnostic page, pinged the ip addresses from lines 10 back to 6, with worrying results:

      10.245.133.12 no response
      89.200.134.43 constant 21ms - 22ms
      77.67.74.94 mostly 24ms occasionally up to 47ms
      89.149.180.90 occasionally 24ms mostly up to 69ms
      130.117.14.86 constant 36ms - 69ms & occasionally up to 50% packet loss

I usually get to join games showing <50ms or <60ms & in the stats at the end, have 4 or 5 bars.
      Pings to bbc.co.uk are 24.5ms & google.com is slightly better at 24ms.

I just tried doing some more reverse traceroutes & line 6 often fails to respond.

      Anyone know what's going on?

      Re: pings

I think the reason for experiencing lag is, MW2 is 3 years old now, and most British players are playing MW3 or even Black Ops. If your regularly playing against mainland Europeans, and they are hosting, the lag will be very poor for you.
I can't say MW3 would be any better because that game has a poor implementation of lag compensation, where the better your ping, the more you are penalized. Your ping is good.
I played MW2 non stop when it first came out, and it was a great game, but the host always had the advantage.
Don't think you can do anything to remedy it I'm afraid.
Last time I played, was when I was testing my new fibre connection, and I have to say I was unstoppable, because I was the host 9 times out of 10 and they didn't penalize you like the more recent COD games.

PS I had 17 days playing online. I had far to much time on my hands

      Thanks fryingpan
I just didn't imagine it could be that simple.

I genuinely thought that if i can only get in to matches with euro-gamers & my response time was non-existent in one game, then snail-like the next, that i must have a problem.
MW2 is still a popular game after all.

      Overcomplicating things as usual

Anyway, i do still own black ops (although i can't stand the mp), so will give it a try, just to test.
Might have to wait a few days though.
I hear activisions' servers have been affected by hurricane sandy.

      Re: pings

      Not a problem.
I mainly play MW3 with a quick blast on Black Ops. I enjoyed them both.
Your right as well, give Black Ops a try and see if you notice any improvement.

PS again...... MW2 is still my favourite COD by a mile.

      Re: pings

      So...
4 seperate games of black ops, with 27 different players.

      1st 2 games - 12 spanish, german etc, 1 american & 1 brit.

For the last 2 games, i changed the matchmaking settings to 'local only'.
      All 13 were european?

Just had a session at Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test

4 servers within 50 miles of me: ping 65 jitter 20
Occasionally get a silly result like ping 107 jitter 131

9 european servers up to 600 miles away: ping 65 jitter 9.
      Rotterdam: ping 42 jitter 7.
Not sure what to make of all that really.

I guess it would be good to know how results at pingtest.net using a ps3 browser compare to that on a pc, on the same connection.

Not that i'd be so cheeky to actually ask if anyone would do that

      Re: pings

      I'm now getting 39 / 9 at uk servers & 40 / 11 as far as barcelona.

I assume pings should be a little higher in the evening, so either pingtest.net doesn't work properly with ps3 browser, or my line isn't quite right.

      Re: pings

nothing wrong with line pings do vary from server to server ,generally very little difference morning or evening unless busy exchange or poor line quality when getting busy . looking at your results cannot see any issues UK average usually 35 to 35 ms Europe 60 to 80ms America 100 to 140ms but again depends on host server.

more or less had similar results back in early 90s with dial up

      Re: pings

After a fair bit of searching online & a few pm's here & there, i think i've managed to find out why i'm rarely able to be matched with other UK players, atleast with COD games.

Basically, it's nothing to do with my line & everything to do with the games' geo-location tech, based on my IP address...

All of the 'whois' type websites list my IP address as being at herne bay in kent, which although incorrect isn't far off.
It is however, about as near to france as you can get without actually being there.
Hmm, so COD games think i'm in france?

I'm not saying this^ is fact - just that it's what makes sense after some research, although it would certainly explain why...

      A) In about 80% of the games i play, 90% of my opponents are from mainland europe, with about 30% of those being french.
      B) In about 10% of the games i play, ALL of my opponents are french.
      C) For several weeks after my IP address last changed, i was having a great time on COD & loving it. I had no reason to check my 'players met' list, but i do check the 'whois' sites whenever my IP address changes & for the first week or so i was listed as being in edinburgh. After that i was listed as being in skipton for week or two & these 2 periods coincide with my last good COD experience.

Have you tried using a Proxy server. If you can with a console, it may be worth trying.

      Re: pings

I had a good look in to what you suggested isitme & if the proxys' address was listed as being in, say london or atleast n/w of me, i think it would have been the perfect solution.

Unfortunately, everything on offer seems to be a download / install / run type affair, which isn't possible with the ps3's fisher price os.

Still, i've had even more confirmation that it's not just me, so fair do's. I'll admit defeat on that one.

      Cheers.
