Would I benefit from Gamer Profile?

      Hi guys,

I do have a thread over on the DLM thread, but thought I would go a bit more in depth here for some help.

Anyway, I've been on Sky Broadband Unlimited for about 2 weeks or so now, and while I haven't had any trouble with speed, my ping has been a bit high.

When I signed up for phone and broadband I was quoted a speed between 11.2 - 18meg, which seems fine, as I was with TalkTalk LLU and was getting about 12meg download and 35-40ms ping. Anyway everything was fine with the DLM apart from my ping being around 60ms and my sync speed around 12,800kbps......... I had a chat with a Sky customer service guy, and he said he would put me on the Gamer Profile, when I checked my router stats they went up from 12,800 to 16,800 kbps which was great, but my ping only went down to about 45-50ms which I thought was strange.

Anyway about 2 days after my speed had been put up, my ping went down to under 40ms, which was great, but then the next day it went all the way up to about 50ms and has stayed like that ever since, seems very strange this happened without a re-sync??? I'm also noticing tht my jitter is going up and down on the wired connections, here is a tracert and ping test:

Everything is wired, and the router is connected at the master socket through an NTE5 iplate. During most ping tests the ping will flicker between 46 and 60ms.

Is it possible that the speed i'm synced at is too high for the line, and is there anything that can be done about the ping?

Cheers and any help is much appreciated.

I'm no expert steven, but the 1st line of your 2nd trace shows:

      143 ms 10 ms 3 ms SkyRouter.Home [192.168.0.1]

      That's a problem.
Unfortunately, that's also all i know.

Re: Would I benefit from Gamer Profile?

Hopefully that was a one off, I have done a tracert again wired and wireless to google.co.uk and both cam back with 1ms on the first line, but still a strange one.

Is this possible because my profile might of been set too high?

      My line stats are:
      System Up Time: 17:35:43
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time

I don't think a profile being set too high would cause that.
      It's definitely a problem though.

Forgive me, but if i said any more, it would be like the blind leading the blind, lol.

I just posted to suggest getting that issue sorted first, before thinking about gamer profiles etc.

      Goood luck

Re: Would I benefit from Gamer Profile?

your not on a gaming profile line would be set to 10 or 20 mb looks like just have set on dlm or manually configured line profile call sky techincial to check if any line error and what delays are set on the if at 8ms then not gaming profile dlm will set line to this anyway if line is stable , but as pointed out that first hop in very large ,if you are using wireless that may be causing issue run tests using ethernet instead if case if improvement suggest checking for better wireless channel as could be something interfering sometimes on wireless , the rest of tracert look fine
also could be possible interference on the line profile looks ok plenty of room in snr /noisemargin , wireless and ethernet meaning router can pick up interfernce from stong power source and some cordless phone can cause erratic problems

Ok, just done another tracert through a wired connection:

That first hope is pretty erratic, never had that trouble with BT or TalkTalk broadband, is this something fixable, as if it's not can you cancel your phone and broadband from Sky within the first 30 days? As this is something I may do if Sky are unwilling to help, also I think explaining this to them would not be easy and would be a hell of alot more convenient to just change to BT or something?
