      Gamer Profile Question

      Hi Guys,

Just been with Sky for over 15 days now and can honestly say i'm enjoying the faster speeds they offer compared to BT.

I've just phoned up today to be put onto the Gamer Profile as i do a lot of Xbox Live gaming and wanted the lower ping. I was already aware that things would be capped, i.e. down and upstream which isn't an issue..

I'm wondering, is there anywhere other than the down/upstream stats that reflect this...on the home hub, it used to show Interleaved and Fast (when on fastpath).

Is there anywhere that i can confirm it for my own piece of mind?

      Cheers!

      Re: Gamer Profile Question

If you are using the Sky router (Sagem) there is no way to tell. However Sky do not use Fast Path, their Gamer profile is interleaved with a delay of 8ms.

Open a Command Prompt and type ping bbc.co.uk enter. This is about the most accurate way to get your ping and show whether you are on a delay of 8.

It would be nice if you updated your Profile.

      Re: Gamer Profile Question

      Say it right now

Sky's Gaming Profile is a downstream Delay of 8ms and an Upstream Delay of 8ms
so a total of 16ms RTT delay plus the interleave depth adds 2 or 3 ms

      Re: Gamer Profile Question

Thanks for the replies and i've updated my profile

I've ping'd the bbc.co.uk as described above and found it to be anywhere between 34and 36ms.

I've carried out speed checks and find that the ping being checked on the speedtest.bbmax.co.uk site is coming back as 52ms which is identical as it was before with the gamer profile being put on it.

I had a quick game on FIFA 12 today and didn't really see any marked improvement, i know from reading it may only help a select few depending on distance from exchange, maybe i'm not one of them. I'll decide tomorrow and give the good chaps at Sky a quick call and ask them to remove it as if there is no change then i may as well get the increased speed.

Thanks for the info re not being able to identify the gamer profile though!

      Many Thanks!

      Re: Gamer Profile Question

You don't need to be capped to get a 'gamer profile'. They just need to set a suitable profile, something which too many advisors are incapable of doing.

      Just to update.

I contacted Sky this morning and the very helpful chap explained that my top end downstream will be just over 11,000 and an upstream of 1100.

He's set my profile to get a ping of 42-46 which I'm very happy with and a good down and upload speed.

Must say what a massive difference it is to speak to someone who can understand my Geordie dialect and who was more than helpful.

Must say very impressed with the level of service so far, far better experience than my previous provider. Kudos.

      Cheers all!

      Re: Gamer Profile Question

There is nothing stopping you getting the gamer profile and 11meg down and 1100 up
you just need a person who knows what they are doing so its setup correct

8ms delays wont slow your sync down in any way

      Re: Gamer Profile Question

Hi there, Don't mean to hi jack, but I've asked a couple of years ago for my delays to be reduced, which sky did, but looking at ping bbc.co.uk, i get an average ping of 30ms.

So with that in mind, i'm not on the gamer profile am I?
