Xbox Live lagging on Sky Broadband

      Hi,

I've recently upgraded my sky package to include unlimited broadband. But now while playing xbox live the lagg is terrible.

I've opened the ports on my router for my xbox

i contacted sky and they did say they could see a problem with the line and it should now be sorted. This was over a week ago and the problem is still there.

i've had no lagg through my previous supplier (O2) so it can be anything to do with my exchange

      Please help!

Have you asked Sky to set your delay to 8 or put you on a Gamer Profile?

Are you connecting the console by wireless?

What result do you get when you open a Command Prompt and type ping bbc.co.uk

Apologies for hijacking the thread. I could use some help.

Joined on the 16th, went through training (solid if slow), requested gamer profile, things improved over the weekend, then have slipped back, sync speed is down, ping all over the place.

Sometimes I get 30-40ms ping with jitter, at others I get as high as 55-70ms ping, less jitter. (line speed peaked at 102xx kbps, now is down to 87xx mbps, snr is all over the place 13.5%-4.5%)

I was rock steady on Orange (BTW IPstream) with 25-30ms ping, no jitter. (7.5mbps sync, 6.5db snr, 85%-100% throughput), but I wanted higher upstream (capped at 448 kbps on BTW IPs) and the Brightbox was more than a bit dim....

Does this MER system have any effect over PPPoA in terms of stability?

I'm so frustrated and I'm ready to bin the whole internet experience, but I need XBL to work reliably. I have tried each ISP available to me, Sky were the zero option.

Yes, I asked for the gamer profile on Friday. If I ping bbc.co.uk now I get 31ms with 10ms jitter - that isn't jitter, it's a useless connection you can't have 30% variance in ping and class it as normal?

      Any advice?

It could be a fault on your line, but before ringing sky again, you can eliminate, if any, set up problems you may have.

First, are you using a short or long adsl cable, or any extentions between your socket and your router?

Are you using a wired or wireless connection to hook up your xbox?

Have you noticed any noise on your telephone line when doing a quite line test? Just dial 1 and listen for a hissing or crackles.

You could try plugging in to the test socket to see if your line stats change.

It could also be a case of what happened to me once when I went for gamer profile.
They didn't set it up properly and it revert back to a normal profile. It caused quite a bit of bother with my line like, speed drops and very high pings. A quick ring back to someone who knew what they were doing sorted it out straight away.

Short DSL cable, master socket, no extensions.

Wired. I have gone to homeplugs (Solwise 500AV - Atheros7400 chipset) but switched back to the wire to eliminate the homeplugs, made no difference.

Absolutely no line noise. We had a new dropbox and socket fitted within the last 5 years.

I have and have tried switching the microfilter.

Yeah, I thought I'd had this sorted last week as it improved initially.

At least you have done everything at your end to make sure it's not a setup issue.
What I find with gamer profile is more sky staff are able to put you on it, but not everybody knows how to do it correctly.
It actually took 3 attempts for me.
One said my speed would drop by half.
The other did it, which led to a speed increase, then I had bother so rung back and was told the line wasn't stabilized, so reset itself.
3rd time was a charm and it worked a treat.
It won't do any harm to ring them again and seeing if they can't sort it for you.
I have been known to ring lots of times until I get somebody who is willing and able to help.
