      Exclamation High Pings during usage.

      Hello all,

      I have recently moved over to Sky Broadbands Unlimited Package just under a month ago. For the 1st two weeks the internet and browsing was great. But during the past two weeks, I have been having pings reaching from 90 to 200 ping constant from 6GMT till early hours in the morning.

      I have rang Skys' customer service team 4 times this week, 1st time being lied to about it being a 'online server problem' when everyone else has 20+ms, and myself having 120+ms. I play Call of Duty4 mostly every day so the internet is very important for what I use it for, and as every gamer shoud know - ping kills.

      The second time I was advised to turn the router off and on for 5 minutes, this didnt work out and the customer service adviser suggested there was no problem.

      The 1st time we switched over to Sky, we had to wait two weeks for the internet to work, and they sent me a faulty router and made us wait another 9 days for a new router.

      I have checked previous forums and tried all necessary solutions but I cannot get to jist why its always this high.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 10239 kbps 604 kbps
      Line Attenuation 31.5 db 16.6 db
      Noise Margin 7.6 db 19.5 db

      I have/had a similar problem.

      First of all your upload noise margin is too high and there is scope for some improvement. Ask Sky to set you target for upload at 7db.

      Also you need to get someone at sky to set your Max Delay to 8ms.
      This will reduce your ping time.

      I went for weeks with a nice ping of around 25-30ms and my upload at 980.
      Then 2 weeks ago, my pings doubled.
      It took me 2 weeks to get the pings back to normal. It is just a matter of speaking to the right person who knows what to do, otherwise you get fobbed off!

      I am still waiting a call from Sky to get my line manually configured.

      Good luck and hopefully the person who deals with your request knows what they are doing.

      The OP's upstream already has a target SNR of 7dB. It just needs uncapped from 608kbps.

      Ring Sky and check whether your delays are 8ms. If not, then ask them to reprofile it and uncap the upstream whilst at it.

      Edit: And when you say 'during usage', are you downloading/torrenting/anyone else using the connection on another machine/etc. during gaming?

      I read the noise margin to be 19.5 for the upload.

      Indeed, as do I.

      It's capped at 608kbps, hence why the SNR is so high. DLM doesn't set target SNRs other than 7dB.

      thanks, which means I am capped at 800.
      As are a lot of others on this forum from some of the stats posted.
      So the op and me both need our uploads uncapped!

      I have all my processes off which I dont need, no torrent files are open or running, nothing is downloading and all outbound connections are cut off except the game, teamspeak and Xfire. No one else uses the router during the time I use it, only in the morning.

      I rang the customer support this week, twice they said I'm already on a gamer profile and my delay is 8ms, so I dont think I can do anything else

      I am not receiving this anymore and it seems to have calmed down, but my pings in UK servers are between 58-60 in Call of Duty4, which is pretty bad considering i'm 200meters from an exchange and my previous providers I have received a max ping of 45.

      Can someone please tell me how I can decrease my ping in CoD4?

      If its on the pc are you connecting to uk servers? Have you made sure like others said that you are indeed on the gaming profile aka 8 max delays?

      I am also getting high pings but during peak times (6:30pm to 12am) and from 4pm during weekends. Sky is complete cr*p compared to my previous ISP and I will be warning people who say they are thinking of switching to Sky for their broadband to stay clear.
