It runs out into the hallway, where there's a thin, square box on the wall. If the box is connected to the main socket, then the wiring runs behind the walls - as this is visibly the end of the line.

You might not be keen on doing this but the only way to determine your best speed is to disconnect the extension in the junction box. It looks like it may be severely effecting your speed. If you remove the wires, make a note of which terminals they are on, make sure the wires to the master are secure, then plug into the test socket again, take and post your stats. I think you will see a leap in your speed or noise margin.

Re: Internet struggling to cope with MW3 Online

Won't be down to me unfortunately, I'm gonna have to persuade my dad to have fun with that one.

What gives you the impression there's a problem?

Also, remembering back, one of the wires (of which there are many) running from the hallway to the door or box was cut in two and had to be repaired. I can have a look to see if it's the cable running to this extension box - if so is that an obvious thing to consider before asking my dad to take the box apart?

Lastly, if this box or the wire is the source of the problem, why would it affect the speed produced from the master socket?

Thanks for all the help so far.

The fact that you are only getting 7Mb when you should be getting 12-14Mb.

Also, remembering back, one of the wires (of which there are many) running from the hallway to the door or box was cut in two
That could be a problem if it was not properly repaired.

Lastly, if this box or the wire is the source of the problem, why would it affect the speed produced from the master socket?
Two things really, connected like that it is not possible to properly filter it and it acts like an aerial attracting noise to the line which decreases your speed.

Sorry, I realised you'd said I should be getting a higher speed - just not sure how you came to recognise that. Should my Line Attenuation / Noise Margin be different given a 7Mbps download speed? If so, how?

      Apologies for all the questions.

You should have 12-14Mb with a noise margin of 7db. The fact that you only have 7Mb with the 7db margin means that there is interference on your line which is preventing you connecting at a higher speed.

Is that dependent on me being switched over to ADSL2+ afterwards or should I see that increase even on G.DMT?

I'm keen to try, will get persuading the father when he finally gets in...

G.DMT only supplies up to 8Mb, so you must be moved to ADSL2+, which is capable of up to 20 Mb with Sky, Your line, due to its length, will not support the maximum speed..

Re: Internet struggling to cope with MW3 Online

Unfortunately we haven't been able to disconnect the extension in the junction box - as such we're yet to determine whether this is a source of interference.

I've struggled on with my internet gaming but after its last couple of patches I find that my in-game connection (represented on a scale of 1 orange bar < 2 yellow bars < 3 green bars < 4 green bars) keeps jumping down from 4 to 1/2, then back up to 4.

Nobody else in the lobby appears to suffer these fluctuations.

Is this something I have to accept if the extension is producing the suspected interference? I've been running connection quality tests, which are returning max delays between 80-500ms. Might those results be unreliable? I'd presumed from my ping tests that I was already on the 'Gamer Profile/Max Delay 8' - do these tests suggest otherwise?

If I'm not already on it, would the Gamer Profile stop this flucuation from 4 to 1/2 bars? Might it make my connection more susceptible to interference (as intimated in a post I read by one of the Sky Team in their help forums)?

Merry Christmas to anyone who's still on here over the holidays, I appreciate your time.

It would probably make it worse, unless your download speed was reduced. The 'gamer profile' reduces the time available for errors to be corrected, with less errors being corrected you will get more errors and so a less stable connection.

It would be better if you got your wiring sorted out, this would no doubt help your stability problem and possibly your ping time. That is apart from nearly doubling your speed.
