Online Gaming [Ps3] with Sky Broadband

      Hi all,

Sorry to ask the question as I'm almost 100% sure that the question has been asked and answered hundreds if not thousands of times before on this forum.

But I have huuuuuge issues with the download speeds and/or the latency when gaming on my Sky connection...

Basically, I am running wireless (I am in a house share and not the owned of the package so cannot without much hassle run an ethernet cable downstairs and into their room). Now when I am on my laptop (also wireless) my download speed is almost always 10MB+/- and have a ping of around 40 on average...

However when it comes to gaming (the games in question are Fifa and Battlefield for example), the latency(?) seems to be appauling... Like I don't think I have ever seen it so bad when gaming before (granted I haven't had a Sky connection before and have heard they aren't always best for gaming, but it can't always be this bad and there must be something you can do about it). For example on battlefield, when getting shot at I run to take cover behind the wall, now on my screen I am already behind the wall but for some reason (I'm guessing it's latency) I always end up being shot and killed.

I don't have the stats of my router to hand as I am currently at work not home.

But if you guys here could give me a few suggestions on what I can do about this then it'd be greatly appreciated.

I have been thinking about putting the PS3 into a DMZ and giving it a static IP address... Would this be of any use (as it seems to have helped others out in the past).

Also I have read the stickied thread from '07 regarding calling up Sky and asking to have your delay reduced for gaming purposes... Is that still a valid thing to do and is it worth doing?

      Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance, and will be eagerly awaiting your replies. And once again my apologies for asking the question again, I'm sure you guys must get tired of people asking the same thing!!

EDIT: It might be worth me adding that my playstation is receiving a signal strength of 90-100% almost 100% of the time so it won't be anything to with not being able to get a decent connection to the wireless.

      Regards,
      Danny.

IMHO you would be best advised to purchase a pair of HomePlugs.

Try to get a pair that have a through connector for the power plug and that support either 100 or 200Mbps.

With one connected to the router downstairs and the other in your room, you should expect to get speeds close to having an Ethernet connection.

Don't forget though that any Ping is going to suffer when others are using the same broadband connection.

Also HomePlugs do not work well on an extension that has surge protection.

Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

So neither of the things that I outlined would help you don't think?

Also, why is the latency affected so much on the Playstation and not so much on the laptop?

      Thanks,
      Danny.

Re: Online Gaming [Ps3] with Sky Broadband

The Xbox & PS3 both benefit from the smallest latency times on their gaming networks.

Most comments I've seen regarding the PS3 & Xbox on this forum seem to be around using one of Sky's WiFi g routers and not getting a good speed over the WiFi connection.

Doing what I suggested would provide you with a wired connection and in the majority of cases this is sufficient to resolve them.

You may wish to consider getting a 5-Port Switch as well so that you can plug both your laptop and the PS3 in at the same time. Alternatively if you have an old router you could use this instead (see the Asking for Help section for how to configure the router).

Yes, you, or should I say the account holder, can call Sky and ask to be put on a Gamer Profile. Many have found that this improves the latency, which is more important than out and out speed for gaming on line.
