      Frequent Xbox Live/PSN disconnects

Ok I have been with Sky Broadband for just over a month (switched from BT because the costs were too high) and I have had quite a few problems with it thus far. The download speed is 130-150 kB/ps which is more or less what I got with BT and I never expected this to get that much higher considering I live in a very rural area. I seem to get my speeds throttled quite often even when it hasent been used for a period of time (We are on the basic package with the phone line and sky+ HD box and the limit on the broadband is 40GB a month). BT had us on a similer limit which we always somehow exceeded which then lowered our speeds even further to 15 kB/ps which makes the internet unusuable.

The problems I have been having with the Xbox and the PS3 are, I can connect for a period of of time (varies) before they lose connection. The xbox seems to do this more often after a party has been joined and the PS3 just disconnects at random (this is quite annoying as the system and game updates on the PS3 are large files and the connection tends to give out before they can be completed).

The xbox is wired and PS3 is wireless, I have tried placing the xbox in the DMZ but to no avail, I also opened the ports for the xbox but that didnt help either. I have tried the test socket but the readings were more or less the same. At first I thought it was the speed but I had the same speeds with BT and it never disconnected before so I just dont know what to do now.

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

      Re: Frequent Xbox Live/PSN disconnects

You are on Sky Connect which is a very poor product to start with. Overall your broadband experience on Sky Connect will be poor but it should not drop out. How many sockets have you got in your house? Are you connected to your master socket?

If you could also post your stats in the full format such as the following:

      System Up Time: 515:11:37
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 45181076 78105435 0 86 361 515:10:35
      LAN 482712 122879 0 31 21 515:11:38
      WLAN 79449406 46622318 0 3702 2033 161:06:21
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 18219 kbps 966 kbps
      Line Attenuation 19.5db 10.9db
      Noise Margin 6.8db 8.5db

Lastly, what exchange are you connected to?

Yeah its in the Master Socket and as far as im aware that is the only working one in the house. Just too be safe I put filters on the others too but im not sure if that would have made a difference. It dosent seem to drop the whole internet as my computer is still able to access online when the xbox or PS3 disconnects.

I only know that the exchange is the Post Office which is part of Spar which is about 1 mile away. If that information is not what you are looking for let me know and I will try and get the right information.

It's going to be difficult to adjust your connection speed. A phone call to Sky may be helpful, but you are on Sky BB Connect. I believe that they need to refer any requests for speed changes to BT Wholesale (BTW)

I've just had a look and there are no LLU providers in your exchange. Also you are connected to one of the few NI exchanges that has not been upgraded to support FTTC/FTTP.

SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Martinstown (NIMTN) Exchange

Essentially you are stuck with a BTW product. If you start experiencing really poor connection speeds, then it is time to change ISPs. Sky BB Connect is rubbish.

WAN uptime is 4 minutes which means you lost sync to the exchange 4 minutes ago. Were you messing with the filters or did it drop itself?

You are being throttled! The http port is cut a bit slack to allow some traffic to flow through and this is why your computer can load websites but your gaming equipment stops working. And you don't need micro-filters in sockets you don't use.

This looks like your exchange: SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Martinstown (STMARTN) Exchange

As you can see from the link it has zero presence of LLU providers which means any form of internet you get will be a re branded BT product. A lot of people on Sky Connect have managed to get out of contract early to switch to something better as it is the worst broadband product ever. Plusnet seems to be the most popular product in non LLU exchanges.

      Re: Frequent Xbox Live/PSN disconnects

I will not lie that I would love better speeds but that most likely wont happen until move move into a more urban area. I dont mind the speeds I get currently I can browse the internet at a decent speed and I can play a game online if I wish with only a little lag. The only thing that annoys me is that It is constantly disconnecting since I switched over from BT, It can get very tedious turning off and on my Xbox/PS3 just to reconnect. You dont think that the disconnects could be to do with the speed? Its just weird that it never happened before until now.

      Re: Frequent Xbox Live/PSN disconnects

Yeah It lost connection on its own.

So is there nothing that can be done to improve the gaming connection at all. or would it just be better to move to plusnet?
