Is a ping of 40 odd really the best we can hope for?

      Hey everyone,

Looking at the limited number of posts on ping it seems that people here are content with pings above 40 (mine averages 46). With Nildram (and yes it was interleaved) I could get pings below 20 (even occasionally below 10!) ever since my days on a half meg connection. I really don't play online games any more, but for even a semi-serious FPS gamer a ping above 40 on a high bandwidth connection is simply unacceptable.

      Keywords: high ping latency

      Red face

Ok, after optimising my TCP settings I can get a ping of 25ms (at least that's what I'm getting right at this moment). Not fantastic, but acceptable.

yeh amazing that when I had 512kb cable back in the day before every noob joined up for bband pings of 8 where comon now were lucky to get under 40.

Although Iam an avid fps player css etc a ping of 8 or a ping of 40 odd makes 0 diffrence to me even with high rates still nippy tho.

only when the ping goes above 60 will you notice anything.

Well I'm not exactly a pro, but I can tell you that pings beyond 30 CAN make a real difference.

If you don't play games online, high pings are not really that important.

      48
I have a ping of 48 when playing COD2 and tbh does not interfere with my gameplay, but that could be because I aint too good at playing it.

      h

pings of 40 are not too bad as long as theyre consistant, when i was with plus net it often bounced from 20ms to 200 ms in minutes [occasionally it went to 350 ms and trust me thats totally pants]i usually get 30-40ms on bf2 servers and 40-50 on cod2 ]again as i aint very good then a few ms wont chang e much
i also thought ur pings were dependant on exchange contention how many hops to a server etc or am i wrong [ie if i stay 1km from an exchange then i'm at a disadvantage compared to someone who stays closer to the exchange?]
