Question Moving to Sky from Be Unlimited

Hi. I'm considering moving to Sky Unlimited from Be Unlimited since I want Sky+HD and the broadband offer is appealing.

Can anyone tell me what the service is like?

What's the upload speed they offer as standard?

Are there any configurable options available, like a 3dB profile for example, or Fast Path?

What's the pings like? I play BFBC2 on Xbox 360 and never have any issues with pings/lag. Can anyone tell me the connection quality on Sky?

With Be I currently get 24Mbit down and 2.5Mbit up - the exchange is only over the road. Do you think I will be able to get the full connection speed Sky offer?

      Lastly I don't use Be's router - I'm using a DrayTek 2820n. Will this work on Sky's network?

      Thanks in advance.

With all fairness you are on Sky Connect. This is reknown for it's shaping etc and general unusability after 5pm until Midnight.

If the OP is going on Unlimited as per his question which is an LLU product, then you are trying to compare apples with oranges. Unlimited is a cracking product.

Good luck with getting out of your Connect contract.

Once connected to Sky, ask CS to lower your max_delays - My average pings on Sky were approx 30 ish

That's your call, technically you are breaking the T and C's of Sky Broadband by not using their router. Although, there is not one reported instance of people been kicked off for using their own router.

      To the OP:

Sky's maximum upstream speed is 1.3Mbps (but people normally get 1.1Mbps)

Re: Moving to Sky from Be Unlimited

What relevance does the price of Xbox live/microsoft points and how old, or should i say how young xbox players are to Sky or any other internet provider? :S

Anyway, i live a fair bit away from the exchange and can game perfectly fine on games such as mw2. Like newsreader said though you will need to ring sky to get them to reduce your max delay, as before i did, i had pings of 90-100, afterwards 35-45, so it does make quite a bit of difference.

Do you know what max_delays is? Be call is "Gaming Mode" which is lower pings but I think they're turning off Interleaving. Is this what Sky do or is it something else? Are there any other performance tweaks CS can apply?

Be too have the same policy when it comes to 3rd party routers. I'll probably use the Sky box for the first few days till I'm sure there's no issues then make the switch and see what happens.

Do you know if they offer a faster upload or is that all you get? I have a 2.5Mbps upload at the moment but I really only use my connection for gaming, so a 1.3Mbps upload won't really make much difference.

1.3 is the maximum on Sky but most don't see that. with good stats you may see 1.1+

Re: Moving to Sky from Be Unlimited

Having a upload over 0.5 meg should make zero difference on gaming, unless downloading at the same time, which isn't a normal thing to do on a FPS.

You will need to use the sky router for the first two weeks i believe (while DLM is on)

You should have no issues with gaming as long as you get your max delays reduced.

I believe some gaming profiles turn interleaving off, i think the lower latency easily balances against possible errors.

edit; sky doesn't do this though, they just reduce max delays, which massively lowers ping
